Default B8?

Can someone explain what the "B" connotes in all of the B5, B6, B8 verbaige?
A B8, A4 Avant. What does that mean?

Thanks,
JJ

Default RE: B8?

it is the chassis code that Audi uses to designate different generations

b is for A4's
c is for A6's
D is for A8's

so the B8 A4 avant is the next generation of A4
