View Full Version : ESP ON OR OFF? wammy18 03-11-2008, 04:31 PM I was just wondering if i should leave or turn off ESP for daily driving... and what should i turn on / off for racing?? I don't want to hurt my car please let me know guys, thanks AZAudiA6Q 03-11-2008, 04:39 PM Leave it on for daily driving and for racing because from the sounds of your post, you don't know much about cars, especially your own. wammy18 03-11-2008, 04:49 PM haha, isn't that why there is a forum? artard. I have heard keep it on for daily use and off for racing. :P works well for me a6in 03-11-2008, 04:53 PM Lets party! ESP however would be in the manual or even on google. joetm 03-11-2008, 06:59 PM why dont we stop bashing the newbie ... you were new at one point regaurdless of whether you asked questions like that wammy18 03-11-2008, 07:09 PM I am just trying to learn every small detail so i don't mess my car up before i go stage 3 in 8 months Kevin 03-11-2008, 08:06 PM ORIGINAL: wammy18 haha, isn't that why there is a forum? artard. I don't want to hurt my car please let me know guys, thanks On or off. It does not make a huge difference. Just try it. If you racethe 1/4 mile with esp on and then off you wont see any difference. If you respect the public roads and drive responsibly you car might never use esp. wammy18 03-11-2008, 09:51 PM Aswell doesn't it come on auto. when the car feels any chance of slipping.... that is what i have found with it even off. ppgoal 03-12-2008, 10:17 AM I believe the ABS light blinks on the dashboard displaywhen the car applies the brakes under ESP. I've only had this happen when I accelerate harder than normal in snow or on ice. The ABS light also comes on when I brake on ice. I don't think a stock A6 2.7T makes enough power to spin the wheels on a dry road or drag strip. If you're launching under high rpm with an MT6, you better have deep pockets for the repair bill. Maybe the 4.2 owners can tell you if the 8 has enough power to spin the wheels. Given that experience, I don't think it matters whether ESP is on or off. Now, if you're racing on dirt and you like to drift, you should probably turn the ESP off otherwise it will try and prevent the rear end from swinging out. Come on guys, if you don't like the noobie questions, just don't respond. No reason to bash a fellow Audi owner. Limen 03-12-2008, 10:37 AM Well I have the 4.2 V8 and tried hard to swing myself around one day with ESP off. It took a little bit, but I did spin the tires and swing myself about. But its next to impossible to do just from mashing the gas in a stright line. mustang196718 03-12-2008, 11:30 AM yep, pretty difficult to do in a straight line, but i can rip all 4 loose really easily if i'm turning and accelerating. usually if i know i'm gona be doing some horsing around, i turn the esp off, but that's just a habit since i used to do the same thing in my cobra every time. i honestly don't know whether it would really matter or not, but i've heard rumors that if you're spinning the tires on purpose with the esp on, that it can damage the differentials and/or transmission. just rumors though, i've never heard for fact one way or theother. like everyone else said though, if you've got a pretty close to stock car, it's not going to matter too much for you because you'll have a heck of a time trying to get the tires to spin anyways, so i wouldn't worry too much about it. NH_USA 03-12-2008, 12:44 PM Leave it on - You never know when some idiot in a mustang is going to lunch his motor and you'll need the extra control to get thru his oil. Or a truck loaded with fish opens up and dumps them on the road. Or some woman drops her face cream on your favorite high speed ramp --Get the idea?? I gave him a straight up answer which is he shouldn't turn it off because he doesn't know much about his car yet for it to matter. Second off, ESP has been around for a while. I personally new about it back when it was on my moms 96' Lexus ES 300. I would never turn it off though, because if I have to ask what it does, then I probably am not ready for it in the first place. I don't bash noobies. I could have been a whole lot more harsh... but I'm sure you knew that. wammy18 03-12-2008, 04:05 PM ORIGINAL: AZAudiA6Q ORIGINAL: joetm why dont we stop bashing the newbie ... you were new at one point regaurdless of whether you asked questions like that First off, I didn't bash him. You think before i posted on here and didn't already drive 0-120 in both modes in each gear?????? I just thought to my self HMMM what if i am harming my car.... that would be noob aswell is being scared to turn off ESP :p - your prob still not ready. AZAudiA6Q 03-12-2008, 04:11 PM Well lets's see, *I* personally knew that unless I planned on losingSTABILITY then electronic stability probably wouldn't be necessary. The speed at which you are traveling with ESP off has less do do with it... it's more about the amount of HP getting to the wheels that your car produces as well as the climate you drive in and the speed at which you take your turns. Happy now noobie? ;) P.S.- My moms 1996 Lexus came out in.... 96....soooo.... that was 12 years ago lol. wammy18 03-12-2008, 06:07 PM well hopefully ur still not in mommys car AZAudiA6Q 03-12-2008, 07:40 PM Unfortunately, mommy's car was hit by a drunk driver with her in it. You are telling me to leave the ESP control on since i don't know much... well you should wake up because you are in an audi and there is ZERO CHANGE FROM IT ON OR OFF. The car has a manual override that notices situations aka it is a worthless tool on the car. Ha... maybe you should just stay out of situations you know jack about. That would be why you drove like a pussy in your moms car and now think your hot in your new one? P.S. Maybe you should spend that extra money you spend on tints, rims, ect on a driving class nub. [:-] Keithr726 03-14-2008, 12:39 AM http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/funny-pictures-fighting-jerry-springer-cats.jpg Esp is there to protect you, leave on for daily driving. If you turn it off make sure to get the feel of the car and it limits. My BMW changes quite a bit when I turn it off, but maybe this has something to do with drive by wire and RWD:D Kevin 03-14-2008, 06:56 AM ORIGINAL: wammy18 ... well you should wake up because you are in an audi and there is ZERO CHANGE FROM IT ON OR OFF. The car has a manual override that notices situations aka it is a worthless tool on the car. Ha... If you believe that there is no difference whether the ESP is on or off, why do you care if it is turned on or off? By the way, in the 05 the car cannot override any part of thesystem unless you touch the brakes. Even touching the brakes only allows the car to override a small part of the system. If I turn the system off, I can get my 4.2 to spin all 4 tires and start sliding slideways without the system turning itself on. So at least in the 05 your assertion that turning the system off makes a "zero change" is clearly wrong. jmpryor 03-14-2008, 08:00 AM Hey AZAudiA6Q (http://www.audiforums.com/showProfile.asp?memid=45228) Be nice to the new kids. By the way I remember when your mom had that Lexus, it was real nice. ;) jmpryor 03-14-2008, 08:11 AM Wammy 1st of all congrats on the new ride, you will love it! The answer that I have found from on/off on snow, rain, dirt roads, road sand, etc is leave it on during daily drive. Too many dumb people on the road that you may need to swerve to avoid. That being said, you will avoid a slight traction control bog if there is anything on the track that is slippery, but you will be hard pressed to spin a stock 2.7T in a straight line, there are just to many parts (awd etc)that are beingturned for it to spin. Maybe if you you had the K04 turbo upgrade you could break them loose. Keep in mind this car was engineered NOT to spin ordrift. That's more BMW territory. Hope that helps! You're seriously the dumbest poster since PAM. 12 years ago i wasn't driving my mom's car... it's 2008 and I'm 22, sooooo.... 12 years ago, I was 10. Which means.... even when I was 10, I knew what ESP did, contrary to you and all your glorious "knowledge." Also, that makes NO sense, "the car has a manual override." If manual override would mean YOU took control of the situation, not the car. If the CAR noticed it, then that means its A U T O M A T I C, not manual. Tints? Check. Rims? Check. Driving class? Only if you teach it! Cause I would love to learn about all the complicated things you're privy to like... dome lights... and..... winshield washer fluid.... and... floor mats. Wammy is an Audi god! How many times do I have to own you, seriously? AZAudiA6Q 03-14-2008, 12:38 PM ORIGINAL: jmpryor Hey AZAudiA6Q (http://www.audiforums.com/showProfile.asp?memid=45228) Be nice to the new kids. Haha Ice Train 03-14-2008, 01:05 PM Yeah man just leave it on. I have done some racing with my 4.2 on dry and wet pavement and the only time the thing comes on is when I am braking in snow and ice. It doesn't do anything unless you are really beating the crap out of your car under normal conditions. modset 03-14-2008, 04:24 PM i think this post needs to move on. Tha ESP is there to protect you like everyone has said other than tha bashing lmao. Spinning tha tires is almost impossible. Even in rain its hard. If u get tha chance to drive it in tha snow then thats a different story. BUT, only if u turn tha ESP off. I can do doughnuts for days. I took a left turn doing about 40 mph with my friend one day and I managed to get it to drift without snow but then tha ESP corrected it and straightened it for me. It really will save u. It did its job right away. NH_USA 03-17-2008, 11:43 AM WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY ISN'T THIS TOPIC DEAD?? That's obvious. If you know so much about ESP, then you should know that the fact it can be turned on and off at will means... you can use it whenever you want. Unless the button says "PRESS THIS AND IT WILL SCREW UP YOUR CAR" then you can press it without worry. But of course, common sense is lost on the WAMMY18coolguywithESPknowledge. prbayha 03-17-2008, 10:23 PM Holy Sh**..that was waste of 5 minutes. ESP Automatic?? Think about it. The button is there for a reason. I can speak for 4.2 owners - you turn that off and you can spin em for days. ESP on and it will never break loose. Off is off and on is on. There is no "Oh Shit" override - at least for '00 - '03...Snow is the only safe place to have fun. Everything else is too hard on the drivetrain and will cause issues. A6Tiger17 03-18-2008, 02:26 PM All this going back and forth after one little question.. the only this better than watching a good cat fight, is reading one I guess!! |
