Leave it on for daily driving and for racing because from the sounds of your post, you don't know much about cars, especially your own.

Actually, I would think the point of forums was to discuss things about your car and learn NEW things. ESP however would be in the manual or even on google.

On or off. It does not make a huge difference. Just try it. If you race the 1/4 mile with esp on and then off you wont see any difference. If you respect the public roads and drive responsibly you car might never use esp.

I believe the ABS light blinks on the dashboard display when the car applies the brakes under ESP.  I've only had this happen when I accelerate harder than normal in snow or on ice.  The ABS light also comes on when I brake on ice.

I don't think a stock A6 2.7T makes enough power to spin the wheels on a dry road or drag strip.  If you're launching under high rpm with an MT6, you better have deep pockets for the repair bill.  Maybe the 4.2 owners can tell you if the 8 has enough power to spin the wheels.

Given that experience, I don't think it matters whether ESP is on or off.  Now, if you're racing on dirt and you like to drift, you should probably turn the ESP off otherwise it will try and prevent the rear end from swinging out.

Come on guys, if you don't like the noobie questions, just don't respond.  No reason to bash a fellow Audi owner.

Well I have the 4.2 V8 and tried hard to swing myself around one day with ESP off. It took a little bit, but I did spin the tires and swing myself about. But its next to impossible to do just from mashing the gas in a stright line.

yep, pretty difficult to do in a straight line, but i can rip all 4 loose really easily if i'm turning and accelerating. usually if i know i'm gona be doing some horsing around, i turn the esp off, but that's just a habit since i used to do the same thing in my cobra every time. i honestly don't know whether it would really matter or not, but i've heard rumors that if you're spinning the tires on purpose with the esp on, that it can damage the differentials and/or transmission. just rumors though, i've never heard for fact one way or the other. like everyone else said though, if you've got a pretty close to stock car, it's not going to matter too much for you because you'll have a heck of a time trying to get the tires to spin anyways, so i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Leave it on - You never know when some idiot in a mustang is going to lunch his motor and you'll need the extra control to get thru his oil.

Or a truck loaded with fish opens up and dumps them on the road. Or some woman drops her face cream on your favorite high speed ramp  --Get the idea??

First off, I didn't bash him. I gave him a straight up answer which is he shouldn't turn it off because he doesn't know much about his car yet for it to matter.

Second off, ESP has been around for a while. I personally new about it back when it was on my moms 96' Lexus ES 300. I would never turn it off though, because if I have to ask what it does, then I probably am not ready for it in the first place.

I don't bash noobies. I could have been a whole lot more harsh... but I'm sure you knew that.

Well lets's see, *I* personally knew that unless I planned on losing STABILITY then electronic stability probably wouldn't be necessary.

The speed at which you are traveling with ESP off has less do do with it... it's more about the amount of HP getting to the wheels that your car produces as well as the climate you drive in and the speed at which you take your turns.

Happy now noobie?

P.S.- My moms 1996 Lexus came out in.... 96....soooo.... that was 12 years ago lol.

Unfortunately, mommy's car was hit by a drunk driver with her in it.

Mommy's got an Acura now and little Lee is in the Audi Death Bat.

Taking joy in another forum member's mother being hit by a drunk driver is not cool.  I think Wammy owes an appology.

No biggie. My mom is still alive and she knows how to use the ESP in her Acura TL too so no sweat of my back.

In the meantime... I'm liking Tiger's idea!!
