My only saving grace is that I am driving a C6 4.2 that I bought brand new, and not dealing with many of the problems that you young whipper snappers are dealing with your older C5s. I still can't believe that the C6 does not have a crank on the front end to start it, hell it does not even have a key to start it. IfI could onlyfind where Audi hid the 8-track player.

Haha! I didn't buy a new Audi - that's my next project after the baby is born.

A yougster in Bradenton, Floridaneeds help fixing his 1997 Audi A6 2.8L AFC, after a bad module installation. Anyone live in Florida? It's always very sad that the young are already too old! At least that is the way a 1997 Audi. The poor car is too old, and won't start. Actually, age is irrelevant to an immortal. Cars don't die, they wear out, rustor go to a yard. It's the owner'swho are too old.

I said I was surprised because around here you see middle aged and up driving A6's, due to cost. I am curious, too....

I think the forum attracts enthusiasts, which tend to be "do it your selfers" and therefore younger people. In addition, many of the forum members are driving 6-10 year old cars where the depreciation factor has made the cars economical to acquire. They get to buy the cars for $15K instead of the $60K us old farts pay to buy them new. In addition, since they are "do it your selfers" they are not paying the dealer to maintain these cars.

Of course I could be wrong and they all could all be Wall Street Wiz kids.

i think kevin hit the main reason right on the head. i always do all my own work.
and for wammy18, all my stuff is paid off except my bike.;)
it also helps that i'm doing architectural CAD drafting for an achitecture company, that pays pretty well, and i have scholarships and grants to go to school, so i don't pay for college either. all in all, i don't have a ton of stuff that i need to pay for, so i just spend it on cars and save the rest.

I am in the real estate business and have been for about 10 years. Just because of how crazy it sounds I will explain. I used to build and maintainwebsites when I was in high school for real estate agents until I was old enough to get a license to sell.

after giving it some more thought - I realized I was no different. my passionfor the past 10+ years has beenmy Jeep Cherokee. I have poured more $$$ into that thing than I can remember. (mostly voluntarily) And in reality - i bought it 10 years ago when I was in college, undergrad. I actually payed considerably more for my jeep than I have for my Audi.

My Jeep has now made it into toy status, andis no longer my daily driver.

I too do all work on my vehicles, boats, toys etc.

I operate/manage a large full service Marina on Long Island.

I have been involved with cars and racing since high school. I drove a NASCAR Modified and drag raced in the early 60’s, a series of sports cars including a Datsun, bunch of Alfa Romeos, a Corvette, and a Brabham formula B in the late 60’s and early 70’s. In the early 70’s I retired from racing and focused on my family. I did stay somewhat involved because a relative my technician was involved with the NY Modifieds and he wouldn’t let me back out completely. I got to do things with guys like Geoff Bodine, Maynard Troyer, Roger Treichler, and Richie Evans. When Richie was killed at Martinsville on Oct 24, 1985 I stopped going to races altogether because it hurt so bad. ( Do a Wiki search on Richie Evans to learn more about him.)

In the late 90’s my son dragged me back into automobiles when he went to work for an Audi dealer. Our first project was a BMW 2002 that was quickly followed by a Mazda RX7, Acura, Audi 4000, and Audi 90 Q. (We even stuffed a 2 liter VW motor in a Yugo but don’t tell anyone.) Later additions were a 200QT, 2 A6’s, a Passat 1.7T and a Jetta. I almost forgot to mention the roller skate…

I am currently the Process Technology Manager at a company that is involved in nuclear fuel, solar cell, fuel cell, and electronic component production. In the past I worked in process research, quality control, manufacturing management, and customer engineering.

Today I spend my spare time with my two granddaughters and running the scoring computers at a NASCAR short track. Almost forgot—and attempting to keep the damn vehicles running because I hate spending money on something I can do myself.

38 :D, Always had nice cars but have never owned a new one. My wife pointed out the fact when I bought the A6 2.7T MT6 that it was my 16th car in our 14yrs together (no that doesnt include her cars)

Man I'm a baby here. Just turned 18 in December. NO I'm not spoiled. My dad was always a Hitler on me about responsibilty and work which have benefitted me. I'm finishing up my high school through home schooling while I work running a feed business for agricultural farmers. Its a good job since I live in a rural area and I have no GED or diploma yet. I paid my A4 cash 3 weeks ago and I only owe 4 more payments on my A6 that I bought when I turned 16. Age don't matter. You just have to spend your money wisely.

I got my 00 2.8 for a fairly cheap price and I financed it for 5 years but so far i haven't had any real expensive maintenance costs. I'm still at home going to college this summer and I work at a crappy grocery store. Planing on being a Benz tech even tho I drive an Audi[8D]

Im 25 i spend 5 yrs in the USMC (was a Sgt), now Im a Dock Coordinator. Basically we send and receive supplies, tools, etc. to offshore rigs working for various oil companies. Its a good job. I work a 7 and 7 schedule (vacation every other week) Working half the year is awesome.
I also have an '04 Trailblazer and an '06 Honda Shadow. Everything I have, I pay for myself and I moved away from home a long time ago.. yay me lol

I'm 20 but mistaken for 25+ alot (girlfriends dad thought i was 27). My last car ('97 jeep cherokee with lift and other mods) was totaled due to a blind driver in a a prius, and the insurance and a bit more money paid for my A6. I do all my maitnence myself since i work at a Dodge dealership. Also i worked construction last year doing 11 hr days 6 days a week for a couple months. oh and live with my parents. but i do all this on top of going to college. If you know how to work on cars and save your money and know how to spend it then you have no problems. simple.

Ok, Someone asked about how you can afford to mod it... I'm 18 the car is technically my dads, but he has a company car and I needed a car so I got this. Cheap I know, but i'll take it. As for the job I am a part-time tennis pro at a local country club (Teach rich kids to play tennis) and generally get about $5000 a summer and another $1500 during the school year. Considering I still live with my family and have not much to pay for I waste most of my money on this car and invest it in stock! (hasn't been going well :(

Im 17 and honestly i have worked since like 12yrs (Doing anything i could do for money mowlawns to my grandparents) old knowing that i wanted to seperate myself from other kids in my area (Northern Jersey). I now work at golf coarses in the summer (Big Money there!) and work at a Ski Resort in the winter! I maintain my car by either DIY alot which i thank everyone here for all your input and knowledge!!! I also save money on big jobs like Timing Belts and such because my uncle is a Mech and doesnt charge me labor just parts :D! Anything else i do i work hard for my money and I hate when someone calls me a rich boy or that my parents bought me my car cause its not true. I earned it myself! :)

Yeah many people have told me that I'm a rich boy or something since I drive Audi's. I've just worked in the mud plenty of times and done my share of crappy work to get all i got. Hard word pays off. I want to start my own company this year to buy a new diesel truck and sell my A6 for a 6MT.

Though I don't belong to the 18-25 category, I thought I will chime in. I work as a mechanical engineer for an oil services company in Houston. 15 months removed from grad school......been a little over 13 months at my first real job. And no I haven't paid off my car yet, still paying off those student loans!

my dad just scored plant manager at a research and development laboratory (shell) and is mostly the one paying to repair my car (new catalytic converter next week!)
my audi is just a new project, my main wallet breaker has and and up till just recently was my 4runner, my wife and i bought it practically brand new for 30k cash after a lot and a lot of f'ing saving (savings accounts were used, trips to japan forfeitted, and the notion of continuing my education lost) . i work a shit job (wal-mart anyone?) to help pay for my wife's schooling (culinary) and to fuel my obsessive need to drive atleast 100 miles a day. wife will be in a job and out of school soon, hopefully either the Hyatt or a country club offer she has received, and once that happens, bye bye a6, hello s4 or elise and welcome back to school!

34 as of last month. Same day as Honest Abe. They say he was an Audi man too. My mod train is just leaving the station and headed uphill in the mountains. There's a lot to be said for buying something new (or nearly...depreciation is a mother) that is covered by a warranty and is years away from major incident, but there's always been a real sense of satisfaction for me to repair/install something myself. To be able to tell someone that I installed the multimedia entertainment system, DV's, or bi-pipe in my own vehicle. To educate my 8 y/o son who believes everything Project Gotham Racing tells him about the REALITY of doing mods to a car: it's rarely as simple as the shows and games make it look...it's expensive, dirty, nerve racking, expensive, and time-consuming work. And even if you do everything right, you rarely add any resale value. Then I ask him to hand me a ratchet. I wonder where he gets his car bug from...

I must admit this is one of the most mind- challenging and amazing among threads I’ve found here!

i thought i answered that already, but maybe not. i do mainly residential CAD drafting, sometimes commercial, just depends on what it is. one of my uncles is a contractor, my grandfather used to be a contractor, one of my other uncles is an architectural engineer, and my father is an architect, so it was very easy for me to get in to. it's very tedious and time consuming but it pays very well.

i'm also partners with a guy here who owns a detailing/car service shop, so i'll fix or clean cars on the weekends sometimes to get some extra cash. i make decent money from that as well, so that's my story.

oh, and i had a loan on the cobra btw, so i'm not as much of a baller as you might think i am. my '67 and my audi and my 2 old bimmers are paid off, but i've got a loan on my bike.

I am 23 living in the lancaster PA area. Anyone else livingnear this area? I just moved here fromSheffield England 4 months ago.

AWE Tuning in Willow Grove PA...GIAC chip w/ stock, pump gas, and handheld flashloader program switcher, two 710 N DV's and a Samco TBB.

Come on! She got a re-cockulous looking ring. I deserve these mods. Whoever is thinking about posibbly chipping their 2.7T... don't wait! This thing is ridiculous! I'm going to have to replace my brake pads every month.

I had 94 Eclipse, took that baby totaly apart and back 3 times.
97 VW jetta , I have been working on it every week for 3 years, not because I wanted too. That was a car that made me hate VW, nothing but disapointment (made in Mexico) maybe thats why?

But after I bought 2000 A6 2.7T, Once again I guind respect to German Engeeniring.
This is one case where brand makes a big difference.

Interesting thread. I just recently turned 24. Just bought 2004 A6 2.7t tip, stock for now. In the past three years, i went through 3 mustangs ('02 gt- i did couple light mods, '03 gt- almost every n/a bolt on and my beast '03 cobra that i moded to 500 horses at the tires) , got my wife 2006 galant gts, and just recently bought a beautifull home for me and my wife. I had to give up cobra for that one, but its ok......it will be back!
Oh yeah, and im doing my last 3 month in the army....did 4 years, 2 deployments. Now itstime to start realy enjoing my life.:D

29 here, 3rd Audi...getting old though, switched to the 4.2 automatic. Maybe one day it'll get a 6MT and a S8 or S6 motor, probably not though.

I've worked since I was 14. Bought my 1st 3 cars with cash from mowing lawns then working on a golf course doing maintenance through high school and college...been in banking/ mortgage lending ever since. It makes more sense to get a loan sometimes, especially when the rate of interest is less than rate of return on investments.

Started wrenching with my dad when I was 12 and he had his own shop. We did primarily 50's and 60's British cars, so much so that I actually started remembering some Whitworth sizes (ok, they were mostly metric, but sometimes.....). He's mostly done with the DIY of things these days, but me...well...I've still got the bug. As a family, we've always had a thing for German and/or Sweedish cars. I gave that same bug to my fiancee, so she has the A4 (she's a former Honda driver) and I have the A6.

I was wondering, how does someone in the military afford the cars Madrussian mentioned, I'm an Army brat from Ft. Hood/Killeen, my dad was a E9 (toured in Vietnam) when he retired, he drove a beat up truck and I wore Attack Force and generic clothes all my life, was my dad just that fuggin cheap?!

I'll be 23 in May. There seems to be a lot of early-mid 20 year-olds. Maybe they're the only ones that don't care about telling others how old they are.

I think the real thing is most 40+ year olds could care less about modding cars. The guy I bough mine from was 50 and was said they didn't have the 2.8 in stock so he bought the 2.7t.

Haha, I think that about does it. I don't know many people who buy the a6 to mod. Most just think its a good sedan. I bought mine from a writer. the a4 or s4 is a diffrent story though! :)

Yea but the bad thing about buying a car from an "old geezer" is that since they have no idea they got turbo's or what the right maintenance is so appropiate warming up and cooling down methods are not used. But I guess that's the downside to buying used. Thank god both my turbo's are still good!

Well using that logic an old geezer would not likely drive it hard enough to ever warrant a cool down, and by driving so slowly to begin with, they are warming the turbos plenty, since old people are very slow from start/off the line, will I drive slow when I'm old I wonder.

This old geezer went with a brand new 4.2. I was not interested in mods. BTW I get the oil changed with full synthetic every 5,000 miles and I had the lifetime transmission and differential fluids changed at 40,000 miles. But I don't live in Pasadena and to quote Sammy Hagar "I can'tdrive 55" :)

I'm 19 full time college student. I work about 35 hrs a week... The summer I did straight 80 hours so... yea thats how we do. :P

I'm 26 and I get paid $41k right now (just started with the company), with bills (I live alone), car note/repairs, saving for my retirement, and paying off these damn student loans ($35k to go!), I have about about $300 left a month to spend on myself.

It's rough sometimes... but it's worth it to have nice things (lived poor as a kid).

Im 49 and drive an 02 S6 and 07 S8.
Over the years I've had 3 TT's, 1 A4 1.8 mod'ed of corse. 3 S4s, 2 allroads both 2.7 and 4.2,and 1 A6 4.2 and curently drive the above. It also helps I had worked for an audi dealer for many years.

I am 33 and just bought my first audi. 03 a6quattro I can barely afford it with the huge mortgage so praying to get lucky with maintenance. I stuck to honda's in my 20's and never spent a dime! I have had the audi for two days and already had the no. 4 ignition coil go out. Thank god they fixed it for free. I guess the young guys are true enthusiasts and can do the maintenance themselves.

I have an honest question for the 18-25 crowd...

what jobs do you have/where do you work/how do you afford to own, drive, maintain and MOD these cars at that age?

I do mean that with all due respect - I am serious...

anyone want to weight in?


Me personally, a 23 yr old, took a severe plunge in lifestyle when I took on the Audi. I don't smoke anymore, I rarely drink, I got to clubs maybe 2ice a year compared to once aweek. I eat at home, take home cooking to workfor lunch.I live at home with my parents, I havea Gf so I'm no loser by any means, finished my secondary education, and am on my way to starting my carreer choice in Policing.Right now the way I'm keeping up with the costs to fuel the car - mind you in Ontario Supreme gas is at $1.37/L which translates to $5.17US/Gal - is by working 5km from home for a Toyota manufacturing plant. I feather the car 95% of the time, but sometimes I have to remind myself of why I'm doing all of this. The car is stock and I plan on keeping her that way for a while, until I buy a piece of land with an oil reserve under it, and can afford the extra gas the car will eat if I mod it. With that being said these cars are like misstresses that keep you excited, or at least with me it is. I know it'll keep my kids safe, as well as my future wife and me, and as long as I treat it well, it will do the same right back.

Im 22, and i just bought my first audi about 3 weeks ago its an 03 A6 3.0. Love it! and everyone i know thinks its a great car for me. ive always been a lincoln mercury guy. my first car when i was 17 was a 1984 Grand marquis. that broke down and i gave it to my cousin about 8 months after i got it from my neighbor. i took my moms 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII and drove that senior year of highschool up till march of 2007 and i got myself a 1996 Mark VIII. so we have to mark 8s in the driveway that i was using. then i got in a totaled wreck 4 months after i bought the 96 mark 8 and just stuck with the 94 mark 8. starting about end of march this year i was looking around for a car to be the replacement for the 96 mark 8. in this order i looked at 1987 Cadillac fleetwood brougham, 96 Lincoln mark VIII, 97 Lincoln Mark viii, 01 Audi A6 2.7T, 02 S4, and then the 03 A6 3.0 and thats the one i bought. Im not sure how i fell into the whole european thing, i never disliked them at all but i just never considered them. i was always in the big american luxury boats. but the euros just hit me and i realized that i could actually afford some of them from 99-03 if i just kept my eyes pealed and found a good deal, i looked at all midsized bmw, benz, jags, volvos, audi, VWs, and leexus as well. im glad i found this audi, i plan on keeping it for a long time. its a nice car and looks great most of my friends and family think its a huge upgrade from the old 94 lincoln. i still have that car of course i wouldnt get rid of it for the world. the problem is deciding which one gets to have garage time and which one i should use! the audi gets used the most of course, the lincoln sits most of the time i try to use it more than once a week. But the audi usually beats it!;)

18 and on my first Audi, yes it is very expensive to maintain but at the same time very nice, my old cars were: 1991 Honda Accord, 1992 Nissan 240sx, anda 1998 Honda Prelude

im 26 and just now coming into my own...house payment ...range payment....4.2 payment i would prob have alil bread but i like toys!!!!!!!

You know what is old when you see rust eating away at your Audi, and gas leaking from the tank.

19 here. My first car was a B5 A4, and soon to own a C6 A6.

i've also got a 00 Ford Ranger. But I'm not proud of that fact. It's the only FWD auto i've ever owned.

im 26, first car was a 99 a4 quatro, recently i just bought 04 a6 3.0 quatro

55 here. I still get the thrill of performance but it is nowtempered by the consequences of poorer gas mileage and potentially less reliability.

I'm 59 and have had two Audis. An A4 turbo in 1997 and the latest A6.

I'm 23 now and I pay for my house, car, and lifestyle. I rarely have much left over after all of this, but that's my fault. I NEED to get my ass back into school so I don't waste this fresh young brain of mine.... then I'll be able to buy whatever the hell I want.

nothing like really being able to drive your car :Dalways loved euros and spotting them on the highway as a kid, now i get to hear the turbos cherp when i hit it
