Default Aftermarket HIDs -- illegal?

I recently installed a 6000K HID conversion kit to my 2003 A4 1.8T -- looks great and is MUCH brighter than the stock halogens. Anyways, I was reading up on HIDs and read that it is illegal to have them if they are not factory installed? Can anyone clarify this? I do not want to get pulled over for having them.

Technically, YES, the hids are illegal. However, in cars made after 2000, there were factory installed hid lights. Since you have a 2003 a4 and your lights are 6k (which should be pretty white with a low hint of blue- factory installed being 4.3k (white)) your not gunna get any trouble with it. Just make sure that the bulbs are aimed correctly at the road. I had 8k's in my last car for about a year and I didnt have any problems.

i got 2 months on my 8k hid , no problems so far , and i add a set on my bike too(r1). on car i aim the lights after installing , to make sure i don`t blind people. it`s easy to aim,if hid aftermarket is legall i don`t know, but for me is worth to have them , i see the signs better, is more safe to drive nights , plus if you run them in the daylight people see you better.

I installed after-market HID 5000K on my 3 BMW motorcycles over the past 4 years, and rode cross country several times. Never had an issue with LEOs in all the states, even when I got pulled over for going 92 in an 80 zone in West Texas.
All HID vendors have a disclaimer "For off-road use only" but you can read between the lines... they are just covering their ass.
HID will give you almost 3 times the amount of light you get from halogen. So... HID away and see the light!
