I  want to buy this VAG COM cable from ebay:

I also got the VAG COM 409.1 software recently, I wanted to know if this cable is the same one "they" use to do thing such as reset airbag lights and such.. Will this cable work with the VAG COM cable. Is it good, same as say the ones for $100+ from the ross tech site.

yes it will work they will send you a way to crack the vagcom program with the ebay cable ... you can only use the 409 software with the ebay cable not the newer releases and also you need to buy they 100 dollar licence to vagcom from rosstech in order to get total functionality of the program

+1 I bought the same cable from the same vendor. The cable works but you still need the actual license to do major functions, although with just the cable alone you can still check codes just fine and re-code the trans. or central locking.

    can you guys point me to where i should start, like some manual, diy or something.. or some alternate programs i should use with my cable when i get it. first i want to reset airbag light and then do the open/close windows with remote mod.. where do i start..

If you have any other cars I would Highly suggest buying the license, because with out it there is not much you can actually do.

On the plus side if you want to control your windows with your remote this will help you http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec36.shtml if you haven't already checked out Audi world you really should there is a lot of good info and DIYs on there as well.

Also a note, when you do get your cable make sure you remember which port you have pluged the cable into on your laptop. I had problems with this as well, If you plug your cable into say port one, on your laptop besure to select COM 1 on the vag com options and then go and test the connection.

what do i do.. i installed the software they gave me. its "vag com -release 409.1". my laptop doesnt seem to read the car.. i installed drivers allso but i cant do anything in the program just a bunch of errors

Are you using Vista?   If so you might need different drivers.  I have Vista drivers for my generic cable and they might work with yours.  Also, for me, I have 4 usb ports on my laptop and only 1 works with the vag-com.  I don't use 409. as I had problems and instead use 311.

im using xp.. i tried both usb (i have only two on my laptop) ill try 311 tomorow.. can i do the same stuff with 311??

I've never noticed a difference between 409 and 311.  So far I have been able to do everything I need with 311.  When you start 311, select the options button and make sure you try all 4 com ports.  Does the vag-com see the car and is unable to read?  Do you get "Vag-com: interface check" Can't access Com4"?

also make sure ur key is turned but your car isnt started ... or it wont read ur car

k with the 409.1 vag com it says for port COM4 "Port Status:OK, Interface: Found!, pass through serial"
but when i go to read the "35 Centr. Locks" it reads some stuff and comes up with "No Response from Controller!"

and with 311.2 ports COM1-3 are "COM Port Status: Innaccessible" but for port COM4 it says "COM Port Status: OK, Interface Status: 5 - Modem!".. then when i go and attempt to access the "35 Centr. Locks" it says "Interface Status = 5,  Interface Not Ready!, Possible Reasons...."...

keep in mind it says the same stuff even when i dont even plug the wire into the laptop. maybe driver issues?

Very well could be a driver issue.  email me at (pm me for email address) and I will send you a different driver to try.  311 for me says interface not found or ready if the cable is not plugged in so something is up.  Also do some research here: http://forums.audiworld.com/vag/

Be careful when posting questions on the vag-com forum as people are pissy when it comes to generic ebay cables.

oh thanks for the help everyone.i found out what it was.. i went into device manager and seen that when i plugged in the usb-serial cable it came up as COM7, vag com dosnt have that, only COM's 1-4.. so i went into advanced settings in the device manager and change the cable from COM7 to COM1 (1 was "unasigned").. after that when i plugged it in and tested COM1 everything worked..
