Default Brake Pads/ Check Engine Light

Hey, My check engine light had been going off and on for two weeks so I made an appointment with the dealership to find out whats wrong. (I have a warranty that covers diagnostics) When they were done they said that the front O2 sensor was going bad, It was running rich, and that my brake pads were getting low. They said the brake pads had a string/wire in them that was connected to a sensor and when it was broke it would trip the sensor. I've never heard this so I feel its kinda odd. I was at the shop on thursday and the check engine light has not came back on since.
