Default need help quick (no reverse)(update)

hey guys im at school right now and decided to make a run to the bank but my car wont operate in reverse. on the dash when i put the car in reverse it goes to neutral.. the same when i put it in park... but when i put it into drive it works. As for 4,3,2 gear it stays as drive.

If it helps last night the road was flooded by a pipe break i guess and the water was about a foot high or so or a bit lower. could this be the culprit? the front by the pulleys are making a strange sound too.

Any help would really be appreciated.

headed back out. check back in 25 or so.

UPDATE

i ran the car again and now its allowing me to run in tip mode again and shift through all the gears perfectly and park can be engaged but most of the times on the dash it shows up as neutral or no gear lights up. Reverse is still the problem and wont engage but stays in neutral (its not like it tries to engage and has problems).

i don't know man it's hard to say. your car has a lot of miles, the transmission might just be on its last legs

this is kind of a stupid reply but make sure you have the right amount of automatic transmission fluid in there. my old car was an automatic and sometimes it would slip out of gear while driving or not engage in reverse when i was pulling out of my driveway. it stopped when i flushed my ATF. the gears need that lubrication in order to interface properly. try that maybe.

ok after awhile i took it into a transmission shop and the guy said that my neutral safety switch is whats damaged but thats what he see's so far. which means my past mechanics really didnt look at it. so far the dealers told me that it is 485 for that part and the shop is charging me 80 to put it in but I'm looking to see if i can find the switch for cheaper... shokan here i come!!

I hope its just the switch

other bad news totaled the family 97 mazda millenia yesterday... hit some oil and skided and slammed into the big concrete pillars that hold up the above ground subway trains. No injuries though... insurance is gonna get higher though. Was doing only about 30+ and the whole front end got banged in, engine and all.

update...

DAMN SHOKAN IS QUICK. They just emailed me back stating that the cost is 145 for used.

thats a hell of a lot better than 4200 for the whole new trans, good work on finding that deal, sucks about your other car though.
