burak -> Problem at the Pump... (4/8/2008 9:40:54 PM)

I have recently bought a 1999 A6 and when i bought the car and brought it GA i had to get an emissions test in order to transfer the title. Well when i got the test the system showed up with an error; the numbers are:
P0441,
P1136,
P1138,
P0455.

One other problem i realized was when i went to refill the tank i had a problem starting it and had to push the gas peddle to get it starting. Then out of curiosity turned the car off to try it again and see if it starts and with no problem it started and didn't do it again until the next time i got gas. Can it be related?

anyone please

Well,
P0441 - EVAP Emission Contr.Sys.Incorrect Purge Flow
P0455 - EVAP Emission Contr.Sys.(Gross Leak) Leak Detected
P1136 - Long Term Fuel Trim Add.Fuel,Bank1 System too Lean
P1138 - Long Term Fuel Trim Add.Fuel,Bank2 System too Lean

Here's the link. Very usful for whenever you have another code.

I have P1136 and P1138 myslef. I would appreciate if anyone could tell us where to start looking for the problem, what could be a suspect for the code. About the problem with pushing the pedal when starting. Maybe it isnt getting enough fuel or air because of a leak (P0455?) Maybe the starter is bad or dirty? I dont know just putting it out there as a guess. How many miles are on the car?

Get a VAGCom, reset the codes, and see what returns.....

Make sure the gas cap is on tight -- or get a new one.

GDET09 -- Why would you suspect the problem is due to a bad starter???

burak -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/9/2008 5:24:14 PM)

I agree with NH_USA i dont think it has anything to do with the starter. But if anyone knows anything please...

GDET09 -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/9/2008 7:13:11 PM)

Idk my bad, I just kind of threw it up there. Thinking it had to do with starting. That was a pretty newb move of me.(im ashamed) Never really totally understood the starter though. Hope the codes could have helped somewhat.

Check the gas cap!!!!!!!!!!

Probably your gas pump starting to go bad... I had the same symptoms.  the good thing is that its fairly "easy" to do if your mechanically inclined.  The pump is underneath the back seat... and if it ever doesnt start, take the back seat off and tap on it, should come on, but R&R it right away

just my experience though

burak -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/11/2008 11:33:10 PM)

awesome, thank you very much! How much does the part cost?

burak -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/15/2008 11:22:11 AM)

Hey i got the problem all taken care of. the problem was a part on the passenger side of the motor. The part cost $140 and the leak was a rotten hose so happy that it is fixed and it got rid of the problem starting after pumping gas. thank a lot hope this post helps someone in the future!

saturnee -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/20/2008 6:38:30 AM)

Could you please give me more information on the replacement hose?  What type of hose is it?  Where is it located exactly?  Just trying to pin point the hose so that I could try it out on my car with the same symptom.  Thanks so much.

burak -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/20/2008 8:41:22 PM)

Sorry for the late response put the hoses are under the engine cover towards the top part of the engine. To find the hose with the leak you should try to turn the car and listen for a hissing sound. Most likely the hose is rotten and is falling apart so it is best to change them all. I also changed a Evap part but i am not sure what it is acutally called the part is like 140$ and it is under a cover on the passenger side of under the hood.

saturnee -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/21/2008 6:36:42 AM)

Thank you very much for the reply.  Would appreciate it if you could find out the name of the replaced Evap part!  By turning the car to check for the hissing sound, did you mean to turn the steering wheel to the left and right while the car is in park?  Thanks again.

burak -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/23/2008 10:41:34 PM)

you actually do not have to turn the steering wheel at all. just listen for a hissing sound and start moving the hoses once you here an interruption in the sound you will find it. I will let you know as soon as i find the part name

saturnee -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/24/2008 7:03:56 AM)

Thank you very much for the reply and for looking into the part name.  The engine has so many EVAP parts to narrow down.

GDET09 -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/24/2008 11:00:54 AM)

I have a hole in one of my hoses under the hood as well. I put some tape around it for now but I don't know were I could buy this hose. Its just under the Pressure Control Valve or Pressure Limiting Valve for those familiar with it. Its on the top right driver side under the cover. Kinda looks like a DV but isn't. As I said above I have P1136 & P1138. Would a hissing/air leak cause this?

burak -> RE: Problem at the Pump... (4/26/2008 12:27:32 AM)

definitely! that is most likely the problem! you can purchase the hose at any auto part store but i suggest to buy it from audi and change it yourself. I saw my mechanic change it and it was not hard at all make sure you measure the hoses right and change them as you go! dont take them off at the sam time or else you will probalbly be screwed! Most likely they are all going to rip eventually so just change them all. After you change them drive for about a tanks worth of gas and then vag-com the car and make sure the codes are gone.
