Decided I wanted an Audi a while back and I've been researching for a few months.  I've come to the conclusion that the A6 is where it's at.  My budget sets me in the 01ish range and I like the 4.2 V8 (3.0 too slow, I don't like turbos and plus it looks way more badass).  I was hoping to get some personal opinions and experiences with the car.  My main questions are:

Realistic gas mileage?
Do I have to run premium?
Common problems to look for when buying?

Going to test drive an 01 with 71K miles this weekend so that will be the ultimate test - I appreciate any feedback.  I apologize if this is a classic noob post.

I have an 01 4.2 I love it!! Great STOCK power with awesome reliabilty. I bought mine with 90K miles on it. When I bought the car, the sales man said that the tranny had been replaced at 85K miles. But other than that, the is perfect. The relistic gas mileage is around 16-18. Right now I am getting an ave. of 17.6 but it varies from week to week.

4.2 is wider more aggressive, but if your looking to MOD it up, a 2.7T will be the best choice IMO.

Thats why I went with the 2.7T, love the ability to modify although I wish I had the 4.2's wide hips. Definitely more aggressive then us narrow hipped 2.7's!

Gracias para the feedback!  Definitely understand the mod potential for the 2.7 but I had to ask myself how much I seriously want to mod the car.  I'd rather stick to basics and maybe throw on some wheels/springs and be done with it.  Maybe exhaust.  Coming from a Subaru Forester, I think 300hp will rock my world.  Btw, does anyone know of a kit to get the duals to stuck out of the bumper like on the A4?  I realized that the tips are hidden on the A6 and I really like the dual tip look.

2000 4.2  my best  is about 21mpg highway.
This car, with its easy power, takes diving to a different realm.
I am "one" with my car.
