A few weeks ago while trying to recode my trans so i could hold 1st gear longer in tip mode i stumbled upon another thread on Audi world.
(which btw I am only able to put it into sport mode and i can not recode it to hold first gear. It seems that codes for the 2.7 and 2.8 differ a bit.)

A member said that he had recoded his engine to think that it was an A4 and after that the car felt "livelier" throughout the entire RPM band. He also stated that with this, it modified the manifold changeover point and the timing.

I tried this with my car, and on the butt dyno it didn't really feel any faster at first but yes it did feel a lot more livelier and a bit torque-ier. Overall the car finally felt like it wanted me to drive it faster. So I was convinced that this "mod" really did work.

I just got back from a test ride driving around first driving full thorrlte, part throttle and in TIP. I then chagned the settings back to ORG, i definatly felt like the car was painfuly slow again through the same streets and situations. I then started to notice that in a particular stretch in the road, with the settings of the A4 it had reached a sliglhtly higher speed than that of the ORG settings.

I then restarted the car and changed the settings back to the A4. I went through the same streets and part throttle and tip modes i had gone through, and on I saw that yes the car did reach higher speeds and it felt more livelier and it didn't seem to drag on and feel painfully slow when i was at WOT. Now I know have not tested this througly enough to get any real data on this yet.

What do you guys think? Do you think this is simply all in  my head that the car simply feels better?

heres the thread incase you guys want to try it out :)

http://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/700362.phtml

So while googling vag com I came upon a review that says you can do 0-60 time calculations and horespower calculations.

http://www.eurotuner.com/techarticles/eurp_0706_ross_tech_vag_com/features.html

Does anyone know how to perform these tasks? Is the full version required? I'd like to try out and bust this myth of any HP gains or losses

interesting....... since it really not worse buying tip to gain that extra 10hp,  this might  be good option.
if you research more and result, and maybe any issues I would like to know.

Have you noticed any other changes? After this mod I seem to be getting more miles to the tank even though I had going WOT a lot more often it seems i've gotten more MPG than I would have before i changed the engine code.

Yes, I would definatly encourage any 2.8 owner to try this since we have yet to see any downs with this mod since it is the cheapest mod you can do to your for car to make it more enjoyable.

Hopefully sometime in May when the weather is nicer I'll actually data log this with vag and do some more tests.

Its on the Audi world forums, first of all you need a Vag Com. The real vag com costs $150 but all you need to do is go on ebay buy a cable for $20 and it will come with the free software or you can download it from ross tech. You then go into the engine control module and recode, all you do is change the last value from a 2 to a 1 and you're done.

Did it to my 2000 Avant tonight.  Does seem to be a little bit responsive...plus I hope that it increases the gas mileage.

I guess the chances of increas of MPG slim since the car is more responsive you're more likely to get on it :P

Wow what a difference.
it was fun taking it around the roads.
it does make a difference.
I'll see how's the milege tomorrow. I'll fill up the gas before I leave. usually 1/4 tank is avg.

Nice. Its actually enjoyable now instead of feeling painfuly slow eh? I think due to my driving habbits (granny style) and this mod I now only fill up about twice a month.

yeah difference in accelation, and also easy to pick up speed in curves while using tip.
made me want to step on gas more.... so for me I guess no improvements in milege LOL
I just went  to  another town and back  with my son,  he liked it also.
3 more years he might be driving this one... so I have excuse to buy another one..

I just tried this reprogramming to the A4 and I don't know what you guys see in it.  Maybe its because I have an avant but it was peppy before and now it can barely get out of its own way.

Oh well.

hmm alright you've got to be one of the first to have a negative effect on this. When you went to recode was the last digit already a 1 or 2? You may have something here maybe it does not work on avants.

It was definitely a 2 before.  Its a little odd that it wouldn't work on an Avant.  Its the same engine. and programming I always thought.  Either way.  I'm changing it back tomorrow.

On the plus side,  I changed a few other things too.  Now all doors unlock with one click,  windows go up and down and with remote and auto lock and unlock at speed.  Thats just the way things should have been from the start.

Well I have been running with this engine mod for maybe a month or so now.  I have an Avant and it works just fine.  I find that I do in fact get better gas mileage.  Before I was getting 22mpg to and from work on 87 gas.  Now I get 24 doing the same commute on 87 gas.  I first thought I was just driving differently, but now that it has been several tanks full, I know the car is just getting better mileage.

As for power increase/feel...I can't say for sure.  I bought my A6 because I wanted a wagon, not a sports car.  I rarely floor my car or even accelerate all that quickly.  So I am unable to say if my car has more/less power since I really don't know what it was capable of before the mod.  My car is a hwy commuter/grocery getter, and I drive it that way.

Jeff

Here  http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec36.shtml  There are also many other really really good DIYs at Audiworld.com

By the way,  there is a way to make the 2.8 tiptronic hold first.  I myself don't know what it is though.  All I know is that the previous owner did it to mine.  In tip mode it will not shift to second until I hit redline....same as any other gear.  Can't find the site for it yet.  I'll keep looking for you.

Yup.  I bought my avant for both.  Skiing, hauling loads and people and going fairly quick while doing it.  I also think the avant looks better than the sedan.

Ok so now I'm really confused.   I found them...
00002 = stock
00012 = sport mode
00022 = holds 1st gear in tip mode
00032 = sport mode and holds 1st gear in tip mode

But mine is in stock mode yet still holds first gear in tip mode.   Whats that about?

So I just took another test drive...two actually.

First I switched the tranny code to 00032.  I wanted to be sure that it wasn't simply the transmission that was making the car seem slower.  I noticed right away that it did indeed take less pressure to make the transmission shift to a lower gear which is what I wanted.  I pretty much had to floor it before for it to change gears.  As my tip mode had already held first gear I cannot comment on that.

The engine still seemed slow though.  So I did another accelleration from a light then pulled over and swapped the engine code back to stock and did another accelleration from a standstill.  Much better.  I don't know why but it just feels much better and pulls a little harder when the last digit of the engine code is the number 2. (didn't think to write down the whole code).

Frankie

yep for me accelation is much better it picks up bit more from stop and when I want to step on it goes.
and milege, definate change. increase in few miles.nomrally takes 1/4 tank of gas from driving to and from longisland to upstate yesterday after change didn't hit 1/4 mark.

I'm happy with it. so far no negative effect at all.
