Default 2000 A4 transmission busted??

My wife has a 2000 A4 Quattro (B5 model?). 49,000 miles, normal driving;

This morning her car , with no prior warning, “lost power”; she “heard loud noise, saw blue smoke in the side and rear view mirrors”. Somehow, she managed to pull into a parking lot off the street. The car was towed to a mechanic. According to him, the engine sounds fine, but the transmission does not seem to be working. He is planning to lift the car later today.

Does this description ring a bell to anybody?

Any thoughts, ideas, speculations are greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Boris

No need to speculate.

I got a call from the mechanic just now. It's the right drive shaft joint that broke.
