Ballpark maintenance cost

Pig Farmer -> Ballpark maintenance cost (4/15/2008 12:07:29 PM)

Going to check out an 01 4.2 A6 this weekend.  It's got 86K miles so if it hasn't had the timing belt done yet, I'll plan to do it asap after the purchase.  Guy says he has maintenance records, but it's a dinky dealership that bought the car from another dealership in VT so I'm a little skeptical as to how extensive they are.  He may be referring to the Carfax report (which I have).  Basically, I'm trying to get an idea of how much timing belt replacement - and potentially waterpump replacement - costs as a bargaining chip if his records are crap or if it hasn't been done.  Any help is much appreciated!

Look to spend a $1K parts and labor. Do the entire service....T/B, W/P, Thermostat, idlers, tensioners and rollers.

OOOO

I don't know how much it costs to maintain a ballpark, but I think it requires the following:

1. grass seed
2. water
3. lawnmower
4. rake and shovel
5. sand for the base lines
6. fence repair kit
7. dust pan to pick up peanut shells
8. white stuff to make the lines
9. a few plastic bags for trash
10. a team to play in the ballpark
11. a jackhammer to remove the Red Sox jersey someone put under the concrete

Ha!  Very clever.  I have a few more:

12. Giant piece of plastic to cover up the infield in case of rain
13. Tiny lightbulbs for animated scoreboard
14. Hunting rifle and ammo to take out angry hawks
15. Phantom hookers to keep Babe Ruth's ghost happy

I don't know about you guys but I'd say the ballpark for a timing belt change on a 4.2L is about $2000 for labor and parts.

joetm -> RE: Ballpark maintenance cost (4/17/2008 11:07:41 AM)

uh if you take it to the stealership

id say you are anywhere from 750-1200 bucks if u take it to an indy shop

Pig Farmer -> RE: Ballpark maintenance cost (4/17/2008 11:41:42 AM)

Found the kit for $589 and I know a good indy import mechanic.  I've heard a lot about transmission failures in these cars - should I have him check and replace the tranny fluid too?  Can't hurt I guess.

katcoota -> RE: Ballpark maintenance cost (4/18/2008 7:33:52 AM)

Umm, the link was for a 2.7 engine TB. He has the 4.2 engine.

I normally buy my parts from ecs and the prices mentioned for doing the work in the indy shop are about right.

Ignour the comments you will hear about the tranny fluid being a fill for life. Get the ATF and filter changed. Good luck whatever you end up with.
