Default A4 engines becoming a problem?

are the 1.8 engines really bad? I have heard a lot about the motor seizing up due to oil sludge even at low miles. I'm looking to buy a 98' a4 with 176k miles and i wanted to know if that engine will last at all...

if its been maintained it should last, just seafoam it every 10-20k miles and use synthetic oil. theres a guy on audiworld thats got over 200k on his moded 1.8t that he actually tracks and circuits.

thanks! yeah I know they share just about every part with passats etc. the audi im lookin at is really fast and appears to be well maintained. Is there some oil drain or passage way involved with the turbo that needs to be cleaned or changed as well?? and what is "seafoam"? It is noisier than other audi's I have driven but it may be just because of the tires... i'm not totally sure

im assuming oyu looke dup seafoam, and now it only helps, it cleaned up my rough idle and alot more. if you havent foudnt he thread its pretty much a kerosene based cleaner, 1 can inthe gas tank cleans the fuel system, half can in the oil pan helps clena out the lubrication system and also goes through the turbo (drain oil after doing this, most guys do this when tehy fill up and drain the oil when their empty), and the rest of the half can through the vac lines cleans up the combustion chamber and intake valves. alot of guys have done it and have nothing but good reviews about it. its espacially good for the 1.8t because it helps keep the screen int eh oil pick up tube clean 0f sludge.
