Hate to be a party pooper, but gas in Europe has been $6-8/gallon for the past few years and Canada has been over $4/gallon for quite a while. Typical cars in Europe and Brazil are 1.0 - 1.8 liter engines and subcompacts. Bottom line is we Americans have been spoiled by cheap prices for a long time. And look at the wise decisions we make - I can't tell you how many Tahoes and Hummers blow by me on I96 when I'm doing only 75. PS - I'm not happy with prices either, but it's supply and demand, not govt that did it. Well - Bush has been owned by the gas companies for a long time and only recently increased the CAFE mandate which had not been changed in 20+ years. If we had ratcheted up fuel economy at the same rate as inflation, gas would still cost a bundle but typical cars would get 30-40 mpg instead of 20. If you want to hold our govt idiots responsible for something, how about the billions they've wasted in Iran on a war based on fraud that we cannot possible win, in spite of our great soldiers. We piss away in a month enough to fund healthcare for every American without it, and in a year repair most of the roads and bridges in the US. That creates some nice jobs, too. But instead we bail out homeowners who made bad decisions on mortgages they could not afford (and I feel sorry for them, they were taken in) and also the speculators who tried to make a quick buck and got burned, now want to be saved. And the mortgage tycoons who got us into this mess are bailing out with their platinum+ parachutes while the taxpayer bends over. Sorry about the rant - I feel better now. PS - You want to start worrying about something new? The world is starting to experience a reduction in food output due to water shortages. The countries that have been marginal for feeding their populations, whether due to weather-caused famine or war-caused famine, are getting worse. Food prices will start to rise faster in this country soon.

I'm not going to disagree with any of the politics here, but honestly... What are you (or anyone else here) going to do about it? Taking a stand on a soap box in a car forum isn't going to do anything. There's an "Off Topic" forum for things of this nature. I realize that you (ppgoal) didn't start the politics here, but whining about it online accomplishes nothing. Lets keep the topic on cars in the car forum. Maybe (since you're in W. Michigan), we can get a car club started where we can piss and moan about this stuff in person over a beer or something!

Didnt read the whole thread, but... Unfortunately, all gas pumps have an internal correction factor to about 20C. This means when its cold out the pump actually allows less gasoline through, and vice versa when its hot. This does not seem to happen though, as they turn on the correction factor when it is to their benefit and turn it off when it is to our benefit.

Little story from tonight. So I'm deep in the reserve (ALMOST DONE) and I'm like sh*t I need gas. I know in the back of my mind its shot up a lot lately and I'm like damn what do I do? So I go in the garage and find 2 bags full of cans and bottles. I have $4 dollars in my wallet and I need gas to get to school tomorrow. I go and put my $4 in (BP Ultimate) and it raised the needle a little bit. I go to the store (Mejier for those who are familiar with it) and recycle the cans and get $8 out of em (MICHIGAN - 10 cent return) I again go and put that money in gas and when I turn the car on what do I hear and see: BEEEEP!! RESERVE!!!! WTF Its ridiculous

With the current exchange rate between UK and USA, we're paying around $9.83 per gallon in England.

ORIGINAL: a6hcw Supply, demand, speculation, international politics mean that this depletion of resources will continue. Even nuclear power is plaged by radioactive wastes and not enough fuel. Science fiction is more fantasy. It costs about $20 million to go the international space station. How much will it cost to go to a Mars with a 1% atmosphere and no water? So, it would take trillions of dollars to go past Mars for a oneway trip to "nowhere". For now, all you could do is to check your brake calipers to see if they drag. If they do drag, then try replacing the caliper boots and seals. Try replacing the brake rotors if they are badly worn. ATF needs to be changed. Next, try a motorcycle. If that doesn't work, then try a bicycle for local trips. When gas cost 25 cents a gallon, the dollar was worth more, so there were still unhappy people who wanted free energy. supply is an issue, but depleation of resources isnt. New oil is discovered every year, the problem is that it's usualy a small amount and the places where the masses of oil is located is where the lack of growth is happening (ie.. middle east). The aggervating part is that certian people in our country continue to deny using our own vast resources to keep us afloat. The largest concentration of oil and gas in the world is now probally located in ANWAR and off seas spots that dot the eastern coast. What has to be considered is whether we wish to possibly throw our economy into a recession due to inflation while we discover alternative fuel sources or inject ourselves with enough oil to power all the cars in america for $1.30 for 93 for 60 years, and lets face it.. although the rest of the world hates to admit it.. the american economy is a yard stick for most other global economies.. if we aern't doing well no one else is. Inflation is what is killing gas prices, and the fact that the government taxes all gas anyway (the tax is built into the price) If you don't believe me all you have to do is compare the price of gold to the price of a barrel of oil today and versus 50 years ago, *both* have grown at the same rate quote:
If you want to hold our govt idiots responsible for something, how about the billions they've wasted in Iran on a war based on fraud that we cannot possible win, in spite of our great soldiers. We piss away in a month enough to fund healthcare for every American without it, and in a year repair most of the roads and bridges in the US. That creates some nice jobs, too. sounds like someone's a media whore.. If you acutaly did any research from primary sources you'd find out how wrong you really are. Stop believing everything you see on CNN and the morning paper I mean serisouly.. when was the last time you heard about Iraq in the morning news on TV? Why do you think that is? mabye because things are acutaly working out there and they don't want you to know about it??? and if you really want healthcare for every american you should take a quick look at how horribly it's failed in places it's been implimented, like the UK and Canada, where people spend thousands to fly to the USA to recieve healthcare, not to mention how communist it acutaly sounds, Hillary and Barack are not talking about universal healthcare, they're talking about Wealth redistribution in the long term. most of their policies sound very socialist to me. quote:
But instead we bail out homeowners who made bad decisions on mortgages they could not afford (and I feel sorry for them, they were taken in) and also the speculators who tried to make a quick buck and got burned, now want to be saved. And the mortgage tycoons who got us into this mess are bailing out with their platinum+ parachutes while the taxpayer bends over. now that I agree with.. people make bad decisions and people that make decisions correclty and smartly shouldn't be forced to pay for someones mistakes. However, I believe it is less a charity the government is doing to it's citizens and more of a measure to prevent inflation and to boost a slowing economy. However I don't understand how you can contradict yourself so baddly. In one statement you critizie the government for bailing people out of a bad morgage but in another you say that the money spent in iraq preventing the people that want to KILL YOU from acutaly completing that task is better off spent giving everyone healthcare.. well this is how I see it.. any money that's not spent to YOUR benefit is money wasted. Now tell me I'm wrong.

Ok, i know we should probably start another thread, but since we got on that subject...... Did anyone watched zeitgaist or foringheit 9/11 or something like that? Maybe its just a propoganda or maybe not, howver some of the stuff they were talking about is truth. In the near future there wont be America no more, it will be north american union of canada, mexico and us. Its proven fact and Bush sined all the papers almost a year ago.....however no one knows about it. And dollar will be replaced with new Amero, wich u can start bying right know as they are already in the making. An the funny thing is that every dollar that was made, dont belong to u, or govenment...it belongs to federal reserve bank, wich controled by a group of international bankers, not president, not government. And every dollar that is in serculation was loaned to the government with sertain debt atached to it.....and federal reserve bank is almost 100 years old so u can only imagine how much us government own to them! And as far as war in Iraq...its just continue to drag with nothing going on. I spent 2 years in Iraq, and we all fighting "invisible" enemy. Locals are ****less scared to fart in their own house, not to mention to actualy pick up weapon and fight! most of damge done by motars, mines, bombs on the side of the road.....anyone could of place them their. As a maner of fact i think that government pays someone to actualy place them their so this thing could still drag. A lot of very rich people getting even richer and they dont care at what coast. As far as gas prices rising, sure it sux, but u cant do anything about it. U can ptotest by not buying anymore gas, but i dont think that they would get the message. And i am preaty sure they got everything planed out for the next 10 years or so......i mean to exact number! Kind of feeling like a pupet here....... sorry for a long thread.

I remember when gas was just a little over a dollar when I was in HS. Looking for spare change my friends might have lost in the back see just for a few gallons of gas to last the rest of the week. Now spare change doesn't even buy you a gallon of gas. Oh well, I have come to grips with it. I loved the Mazda3, but I love the A6 more. I guess 100 bucks more a month in gas is worth it.

It's $4.19 here in Silicon Valley for Premium. Not only housing is unaffordable , gas is not affordable, either. Is there anywhere else that's as comfortable as Silicon Valley but cheaper to live? I'd love to sell everything and move there.

If you can't afford, then take the time for free financial counciling before you loose your Audi. Contact your bank for information. There are smaller Audis, such as A4 and A3. However, if you love your Audi then you might inspect the parking brake lever on the rear calipers and the parking brake cables for corrosion. A dragging parking brake could cause bad mileage. Bad sensors are also part of the problem. Rusty gas tanks can even leak. Anyway, this rapid change in gas prices is actually a market correction caused by the depletion of the supply. So, to get back to lower prices there would have to be an oversupply of gas. However, this is not sustainable for the long term. Even the price of asphalt for patching pot holes has become a problem for local governments. What modifications are required to get 35MPG from an A6? How much would these modifications cost? Instead, most threads are about boosting HP!

when i started driving in 1964/65 in ny, gas and cigarettes were around the same price, 0.29 per gallon or 0.29/pack ... had a 1953 sunbeam (looked like a london taxi) and a 1961 oldsmobile super 88 that probably got 10 miles per gallon ... went to a '67 vw for 2 years and then a 1959 jag xk-150 (another 10 miles/gallon car) ... but back then, 0.29 was "real money" (LOL) now i'm in nj and cigs are $6+ per pack and gas looks cheap @ 3.19/3.29 for regular and $3.59/3.69 for premium (i'm in ocean county, nj) have to agree with the old joke that if you have to ask how much gas is, you shouldn't be driving that rolls royce (jaguar, ferrari) ... or, perhaps, audi? dennis

Just like the other guys said, there's always something going on. Even though gas prices are high, at least we can fill up anytime we want unlike the gas shortgage in the 70's. With America wanting instant gratification could you imagine if the Hummers and SUV's of the world had to wait in line and only be allowed a few gallons of gas? There will always be some kind of war, could you imagine if we were involved in another kind of world war where more US Soldiers died in one day than have sacrificed their life over the last 6-7 years? You can never please everyone all the time so we just have to make the most of it and thank God we have our freedom....our lives could be worse.
