DoubleFace -> 2001 Audi A6 Trouble shooting PO420 (4/24/2008 4:30:23 PM)

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a 2001 Audi A6 2.8L v6 few weeks ago. This morning the check engine light came on. I took it to Autozone to scan it and this is what came up:

Trouble shooting PO420
Catalyst efficiency Low-bank 1
Explanation: The oxygen sensors monitor the catalytic converters
ability to store oxygen.
The PCM has determined that the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1
is below the threshold for the current operating conditions. (Bank 1
identifies the location of cylinder #1 while bank 2 identifies the
cylinder on the opposite bank)
Probable causes:
1) Catalytic converter defective (possibly due to #2, #3, or #4)
2) Engine misfire or running condition
3) Large Vacuum leak
4) Engine oil leakage into exhaust-valve guide seals, piston rings

Somebody told me that there is a way I can bypass the sensor so the check engine light can stay off...if there is a way, does anyone know how I can do it?
Thanks

Yes there is but if there's a problem I defiantly wouldn't ignore it. Things will only get worse and you'll be dealing with more and larger problems.

Of course I agree with the rest and I think that you should fix this to avoid future problems...but if you are not going to fix this anytime soon I would suggest buying a vag-com scanner. You can buy a cheap vag-com cable on ebay or one from ross-tech. I think the ebay cable is only capable of reading and clearing codes (but in this case that would be what you are looking for). At least if you scan your car periodically you will know if the car is throwing any other codes that are more serious and need immediate attention.

Ask an indi shop to look at your car and they will be able to tell you if they can weld a universal cat to your audi. This will be your cheapest option if you decide to replace the cat. The universal cat costs around $70. Good luck.
