hello everyone, 2004 a6 with 62000 miles. I noticed a gasoline smell in my garage after I filled up at the gas station. There is no smell inside the trunk , cabin or under the hood. I used up 1/4 of the gas but the smell is still there. The strongest smell is near the back doors. Thanks for your help!
My 2002 2.7t broke the gas tank at around 86,000 miles and I got the same thing. Eventually you would see a puddle of gas below back door area when it gets bad enough. It was common with the 2.7 due to its multi tank configuration. Is it a 2.7t?
could be the seal around your gas cap ... audis have an evap seal ... usually a cel will appear if thats the case but if u really crank down the gas cap itll go away so that could be the prob ... when i had my 2000 a6 it was one of a few issues

hmm well id say ur dripping or leaking somewhere ... notice any spots or a lower level of gas when you get in your car ?? if not then its gotta be somethign with your evap system

this morning had gas smell in the garage, I had to put the car outside. I used the car for a 25 miles trip, later I looked under the car everything looks bone dry ( what ever I could see), So far no smell in the garage.

Its the gas tank, all A6's share the same gas tank design for quattro models. There are about 4-5 evap nipples on the top of the tank that have little metal sleeves inside them, the sleeve slowly works its way out and makes the nipple easy to bend or break off. Its not enough usually to cause a check engine light but you WILL see gas on the floor. I had to replace gas tanks on 2.8,3.0, and 2.7T models for this same problem.
Are the nipples on top of the tank? that's where I would expect an evaporative emmisions nipple. If so, that would mean that the only gas that would leak out would be gas that is splashing around during driving, correct? So, there would be no puddle in the garage, correct? But he would still smell the gas as it evaporates, correct? Then, he would be faced with an outrageous repair bill, correct?
Or, would a little silicon seal solve the problem?
Thank you all for helping me, as of now 3/4 gas in the tank no smell, no ppuddle on the floor. I keep you posted after my next fill up.This is my first Audi . Maybe my mechanic was right whenn he said stay with the Saab. I have a 92 with 275000 miles a 98 with 195000 miles and a 05 with 62000 miles.
