Ive heard talk about changing the A6 engine to think its an A4 engine. Ive tried searching for a guide or the code to do it but i havnt had any luck. So if anyone can help by either giving me what number to reprogam it to or a website that has a whole list or a place where to get the list of codes that would be great.

Thanks!

Under engine, select recode and change the last digit of the code from a 1 to a 2 or a 2 to a 1 (can't remember)  Thats all I remember.  Someone will chime in soon I would imagine with more details.

I haven't found any disadvantages yet doing this to my 2.8 but its so far just been a pretty big + and the engine actually feels like it wants to be reved up higher.

Yeah def. a nice improvement heh even if the mod did work i highly doubt you 2.7 guys would notice anything since the 2.7 is a much better and quicker engine than the 2.8

Oh really now, wish I had gotten a chacne to drive the 2.7 befor.e i had bought mine. How does it feel in comparison? A much more mod friendly car and sort of like going from granny's car (the 2.8) to a normal sport sedan i'd assume

Other than losing 10hp, I haven't noticed any.  I have noticed a 2 mpg increase, but I could also just be driving differently.  I don't know if there is any proof that you gain or lose 10hp fwiw.

I don't think i've lost or gained any HP by doing this mod but I did notice more miles to the tank as well, we should dyno test this, but I think its simply a myth because in post he moded his A4 to think its a A6 and he said it felt like crap. So I really don't believe there is any hidden power behind this mod but simply a more livlier drive for us 2.8 drivers.

"About 2 years ago, on the A4 forum, someone posted that his dealer tech told him that if you recode your A4 2.8 ECU to think it's in an A6, it would 'unlock' the mystery 10 hp that the A6 has over the A4."  Kris Hansen

Here is where I got the 10hp belief from.  If you recode the A4 to think it's an A6 you gain 10, then telling an A6 it's an A4 you should lose 10.

I can't say I have noticed any increase or decrease in power.  I can say the car seems to accelerate a little faster and I seem to be getting a little better gas mileage.  I will say thanks to Asianicestyles cause if this does really save me some gas I owe you one for bringing Kris's thread to my attention. :)

Jeff...did you do this mod on the 27th when this thread started? or when exactly did you do it?...Because if you just mod the engine and you can already see a 2 mpg increase then I want to give this a try. Also, if you see any clear disadvantages in the next couple of days please post...I will def keep an eye on this thread...thanks...

I did it maybe a week or so ago.  Here is a link to the original audiforums.com thread about this.  I changed mine I think a few days after reading it.

http://www.audiforums.com/m_857261/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#859272

Oh, fwiw I am constantly being nagged by my partner to give the car gas.  I used to average 22 back and forth to work, now I average 24.  But now that gas prices have risen I can't say my driving habits haven't changed and are causing the 2mpg increase in mileage.  I used to hate that the tip in for the throttle was so jumpy, now it seems more linear.  I like that I can take off smoothly, before it felt like a dodge product in its attempt to artificially make the car feel powerful.

who knows, this could all be in my head (wouldn't be the first time).

24 mpg?  How fast or rather slow do you drive?    I only manage about 17 mpg combined.

Anyways, yes thanks to Asianicestyles...  I just did the recode to my car a few days ago, and it does seem more peppier.  I haven't gone through a tank of gas yet to see if there was any mileage increase or not, but I am happy one way or the other.

No retail vag-com cable and software needed.  I have a cable from ebay and used their shareware version.

I did this change last weekend.  I used a cheapo cable from Ebay and the freeware version of Ross-tech's software.  I immediately noticed an increase in "perceived performance".  Weather or not it actually increases power I cant tell as I don't have access to a dyno but the car is much more responsive especially at lower speeds.  Surprisingly it seems there is also an increase in gas mileage, but I have not tracked that well enough to actually say if that is true.
The question I have is why would Audi cripple the performance of the A6 2.8 like this - is it an issue with reliability or just a marketing thing. Some other reason?

Yeah I did a search on this and found that no one has really talked about this so i thought i'd bring this mod over from the audi forums and help out some of the other 2.8 guys  really couldn't just keep this to myself since the car does drive much better and a lot of the newbs. complain about how slow the 2.8 is. Its the cheapest and almost free (if you already have a vag) mod you can do to your car.

No, sorry the topic of recoding cars to think its an S4 or RS4 has been covered none of such nature exists. And so far the only asnwer i can come up with or i've seen is that the A6 has been detuned for grannies over the A4.

Thanks a lot!

that will work. You can't really go wrong with any of the wires on ebay if you type in vag com as long as its a reputable seller. Just don't overspend
