when i press the "esp off" button to turn it off nothing happens, is the light supposed to come on?

It should light up. Are you pressing it when driving or when in park?

i tried it both ways

The actual ESP button doesn't light up; the yellow icon for the ESP should appear on the instrument panel when it's off.
