I have never seen a bolt like this with this type of spline before. Does anyone know if it takes a specialty tool to remove (Audi specific) or where to get one? It doesn't look like a regular torx.

It's a 12 point internal spline. A Torx will work in it. You can get an internal spline set at any import auto parts store or large, well stocked all lines parts store.

Or, just use a pair of vice grips on the outside....

Try a hex, I'm pretty sure that's what I used.

Also known as triple square bit... It has "M" designation infront of the size. I think the fuel filter one is M10. Similar example for a torx bit would be T-25 and etc.

I used a hex also. If someone has already changed the filter, the bolt and the nut on back may be stripped as was the case with mine. A lot of people said the same thing. You can't get anything on the back to hold it because the space is too tight. I had to get a screwdriver to put some tension on the band and just get it loose enough to work the filter out. Make sure you have a lot of rags or newspaper on hand. The system has a lot of pressure on it and gas will go everywhere. I also took the fuse out that controls the fuel pump. Good luck with it. It won't be bad at all if your hex bolt isn't already stripped.
