Check Engine Light Problem Please Help!

2000_2.7t -> Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/5/2008 8:39:56 PM)

I recently had a full timing belt/fuel filter/air filter done at the dealer.  About a week after the service was done early one morning I started my car and it ran rough and shaky for like 30 yards, I took it to the dealer that day.  Next thing I know I am paying the dealer $600 for a new battery and a turbo cutoff valve....About 20 minutes after leaving dealer as I am pulling into a gas station my car starts running worse than ever and the check engine ligh starts flashing.  I got it towed back to the dealer.  That day they show me that after checking the codes for the CEL it came up with 4 pages of codes thrown.  They tell me there is an electrical issue somewhere.  The next day i pick it up after they reset all the codes.  The car ran fine and is currently running fine but the CEL came on about a day ago.  The dealer told me that if my car starts running rough then to bring it to them immediatly and then they will be able to tell the actual problem.  Please give me advice on what I should do, I just want my car to be good again.  Should I not worry about the CEL? Help me please.

Please help

TopGUn86 -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/5/2008 11:23:22 PM)

would help to know what type of codes you showed and are still showing. i wouldnt worry about it too much if it is running well at the moment, meaning the timing belt job was successfully done. You may have has moisture someplace in the electrical system, that will cause a lot of codes. but get the codes and maybe i can be of more help

Without the error codes it is very difficult to even think about where to start looking for problems.

The dealer might have a print out of the error codes that were caused. Ask for a copy as you did pay for the work to be done.

Alternatively, if you have a friend with a Vag-Com, they should be able to read the error codes for you.

NH_USA -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/6/2008 9:22:20 AM)

1. Go to Auto Zone.
2. Have them read the codes.
3. Write them down.
4. Return home.
5. Log on to Audiforums.
6. Click on the A6 section.
7. Find this thread.
8. Tell us what the codes are.
9. Someone will help!

10. Ignore the above if you don't want an answer!

When i had my Timing belt done, my mechanic said that sometimes after doing a timing belt your coilpacks will need to be replaced; which from my understand will cause your car to run ROUGH.

This does not make sense unless the mechanic wants to make a bit extra money doing something that does not need to be done.

I'll put the reply differently -- looking for the reason a CEL light is on without knowing the codes is like looking for a virgin in a house of ill repute. (They can be found but the chances are very slim.)

I have actually gone to autozone I will post the codes tomorrow morning, thanks

2000_2.7t -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/7/2008 7:26:48 AM)

The codes are P0431 and P1606, thanks in advance

hxgaser -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/7/2008 12:28:05 PM)

P0431 - Warmup Catalyst below Normal Efficiency. Bank 2, which means your driver side warm up catalytic converter may be bad or the oxygen sensors may be bad.

P1606 - Rough road sensor, typically relates to the ABS, traction control, and ECU electrical malfuntion.  Could be crap built up around the sensors on hubs, but I doubt it.

So what should I do with my car at this point, it drives great it just has the CEL light on, would o2 sensors or a cat be worth it? I beth the dealer would LOVE to sell me a new cat....

NH_USA -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/7/2008 6:02:43 PM)

Most states will not allow you pass inspection with a CEL on, so youi'll need to get it fixed. I would first try a reset to see if it comes back on.

Do a search for VAGCom and get one! I't will pay for itself quiclky.

2000_2.7t -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/7/2008 9:26:12 PM)

Is there an easy way to reset it? Disconect the battery?

hxgaser -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/8/2008 3:03:46 PM)

You need either VAG com or a code reader.  Autozone sometimes will clear the code for you.

leave it stock -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/8/2008 6:35:03 PM)

Hello,
Sometimes finding yourself a good independent mechanic is the only good answer.   Many of these suggestions are right if you want to mess with your car ALL THE TIME.  I want to drive my car not learn to map the air fuel mixture at x altitude and  y rpm!!!!  If you find a competent person or shop you can trust they will explain the situation (as far as state laws and the potential for catalyst damage, a proffesional is needed frequently to steer you through the B.S.)  Most good independant's  will help a first time customer at little to no charge to gain his trust and show his knowledge if he has much.  Just my 1.5 cents MIke

2000_2.7t -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/8/2008 9:49:47 PM)

thank you all very much for the replies, just as I thought the codes it throws are infact false.  My CEL turned off today. I think this means I cannot trues my car's CEL, what does everyone think?

NH_USA -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/9/2008 10:39:01 AM)

leave it stock - If you want to just "stab and stear it"  what you say is OK. But there are a lot of people that want more.

The "mess with your car ALL THE TIME" comment is overstated. Many people that have a VAGComs are not into re-programming their weasel-docks or thing-a-ma-dubs. They use the VAGCom to see what the CEL means so they don't get ripped by a mechanic.

It dosen't take long for someone that reads this forum to see that knowing why the CEL is on important.

I say don't worry about anything for now.  If the same codes come back later, then I would start worring about it.

2000_2.7t -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/17/2008 9:38:36 AM)

Well I got the CEL back and it is throwing the exact same codes, what should I do?

formulagigi -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/17/2008 3:15:19 PM)

take it to an indy shop that knows audi

2000_2.7t -> RE: Check Engine Light Problem Please Help! (5/18/2008 9:54:59 AM)

Ya I need to find an indy shop, but once again the light is off.  I think there is something up with my abs, the previous owner did the abs unit twice, it seems to work fine though.
