im in the works of buying a 2001 2.7t. first of all just to make sure it is a twin turbo? some people i know argue with me that bi turbo is different then twin turbo and that there is only one turbo. also im wondering how reliable these cars really are? ive read a ton of different stuff from they are the most inexpensive and best car to it being a complete night mare. im trying to have the benifit of the doubt. the car is owned by its first owner who is a woman. but the problems that ive read about seems to be quarky weird problems like weird electrical problems and stuff like that? does anyone have any info for me? thanks for all the help

yes it has two 'small" turbos, it is the same engine that was in the b5 s4. Don't listne to whomever is teling you that. They obviously are cluless and talking out of their you know what. Both turbos act in parallel, at the same time congtrary to what some people new to these cars think.
Most expensive???? as compared to what???? a yugo... yeah? a ferrari... no... a same year 2.8, yes, a same year 4.2, prob not... it is all relative.
I would say that overall they are less reliable than the non turbo V6 or V8 A6 but it is all about how you maintain and drive it. It needs to be taken care of, maintained religiously, warmed up and cooled off.... and it'll mostly be fine... but an Audi is an expensive car to maintain unless you can do all the work yourself.
I have had no electrical issues, earlier years like 00 an d01 were more prone to them... I did coil packs, control arms and tie rod ends recently, auxiliiary water pump, CV boots.. and maintenance....

Well put. When I bought the car I knew that repairs and basic mantenance would be costly, but hey at least its not a ricer.... Also Since I am chipped and I do tend to be a bit of a led foot of the line I expect my turbos to last a little shorter than they would stock. Either way you will love an audi no matter what it is!

I have a 2000 2.7. It is an expensive car to drive. I love my car, but it has probably had  $10 or $12,000 in repairs over the last year and a half. I would never ever buy another Audi. I hope that you have a much better experience than I've had. Good Luck.

Can you elaborate on the kind of problems you had with the 2.7, and did you do your own mainrtenance and repairs?  What is your mileage?
I am curious as to what the labor cost was vs. parts.  Thx!

I have not put 10-12K into maintenance cost since I have owned my 2.7T, and that has been 8 years. I have have put alot of money into my car, but that was my own personal doing! 10-12K.....sounds like that car was abused! God forbid when I have to get rid of my A6, but when I do, I will replace it with another AUDI!

I have put  over 10k in mine but in repairs!! As Joeski, said, it was my own doing, mostly mods and service., not repairs.
I also hav a warranty so my repairs were almost all covered under warranty(coil packsm CV boot, water pumpm control arms...)

I have had mine for about 2 years and bough it right in that mantinance stage and we have spend a good amount of money on repairs. We have spent about $2000 in 2 years, but mostly on stuff warrenty would cover, but we didn't have one [:@]. We have replaced a good amount of suspension bits. And now need to replace the joint again because the dumb guys didn't noticed my warpred rotor... It caused havoc on the front suspension, but will be replaced soon! The TB and Pump need to be done within the year, but the good news is once thats done it should be worry free for a while (65xxx miles) so I'm hoping to have it for a while (FINGERS CROSSED)

I recently got my 2001 audi a6 2.7T (tiptronic) 2 months ago with 45k miles on it.... Putting the APR chip, Bipipe, intake and dvs on it pushed the small turbos.... I blew my turbos 3-4 days ago with 55354 miles. The car was only chipped for 6,000 miles of the 10k. If you are looking to mod this car with a chip I would say watch out. If you are looking for a great car without adding anything you are in great shape. Just don't launch to much with those small turbos ;)!!! I sadly have to put ko4's in my car which is going to run 2988 with inlets/gaskets and a ko4 unit. At the dealer it is going to run anywhere from 1500-2000k. I also have had to put 2k into it with random fixes, MAF (mass air flow) and CV boot. If you don't have a great job or money I would say this car is NOT the car for you. Not being mean just a lot of sudden charges!



I raced almost every weekend with the mods on the car. If you treat the car right and baby it, I could see this car lasting stock for a long time or even chipped. Even with all the extra cost I would have to say I love my audi over any car. I guess that is the reason we keep putting money into our car, Right guys? haha

so what im seeing is that if you dont beat the car and do routine maintenence they arent to bad? i knew to begin with that parts on these foreign cars arent cheap. but this car was owned by a woman and her daughter and it is in great shape. but isnt that the case with any car? if you beat on it anddont take car of it it will die :-P . i just heard alot of weird things with these cars like really really odd electrical problems that noone can figure out what they are like windshield wipers randomly comin on when you do something or the seat moving back when they put it in reverse inside lights not working.... this is all weird stuff i read on forums so i wasnt sure.

Hey madman,

Let me tell you this. I have had my car for 8 years and it has never broke on me! Maintenance is crucial on turbo cars as with any car....meaning religious 5K oil changes with an approved Synthethic oil (Motul, Pentosin, Elf, etc...), drive easy on start up until the engine oil warms to 175 degrees and easy driving prior to shut off to let the engine oil start the cooling process. My car has 140,000 miles on it because I commute from Lancaster PA to Baltimore for work (although this will be changing soon). My car is on the original turbo's and you would never know by driving it. My car is powerful! I plan on upgrading the turbo's soon as I can, I am buying a Civic to drive to work so the Audi will be in a garage and the motor is coming out!

thanks alot for the help. i know it is a big deal on turbo cars to keep the maintenence up and do all the right heating up and cooling down processes. normally im used to just changing my oil over 3k miles so ill probably just keep that routine going, as long as it wouldnt hurt the car. it was just the weird very random electrical problems that i read about that noone could figure out what it was that scared me.

Yah my car locks me in if I lock the drivers door sometimes..... You can't unlock the car when you stop! You have to open ur door and randomly you are able to unlock the doors haha Face the facts you are buying a 12G car and it is worth EVERY PENNY OF IT! I am 20 years old and see my self in the future buying audi's! Put 15G and you will have an RS6!!! WHY NOT!

Three years and 81k miles (37->118k) and the only unexpected problem was the alternator dying at the exact moment I impacted a pothole at 70k.  I was out of town and the local stealer quoted $1200 but I negotiated and bought a re-manufactured alternator and had him do the work, total $600.  Would have been $200 less if I could have driven it home to my local independent.
 
Other than that, chipped at 74k for $1350 and clutch/flywheel/driveline fluids replaced at  90K for $2900.  Timing  belt was $800 total.  I change the oil roughly every 7-9k with Mobil1.  Did the spark plugs and all brake pads and rear rotors once.  Also replaced the gas filter and brake fluid.
 
I attribute the clutch/flywheel to the original owner towing a trailer, the extra hp from the chip, and me running it to 150 one night.  Even including that, repairs have been $3500 and maintenance about $1800 over three years.  I don't do any work, except detailing.  You be the judge if this is unreliable or expensive.
 
Let me add this is the most comfortable car I ever owned for highway cruising...fun to drive and good looking.  Every accessory except the headlight washers still work.  It is rock solid in snow and slush.  I intend to keep it indefinitely and would absolutely consider another.

I bought my '02 used with 46,000 miles on it last June. It now has 89,000 miles on it. In that mileage I have had a CV boot go, a front wheel bearing go, one inner tie rod end and the rear brakes. Additionally, the windshield washer reservoir leaks and has defeated all attempts to stop it, short of replacing the pump. Since I do all the work myself, the costs haven't been too high, but I am looking at front control arms, the other inner tie rod end and the timing belt in the next couple of months, which might my opinion of the costs.

I agree though that this is a very stable car in the snow! I have had better highway rides, but I think the control arms are going bad which is contributing to the poor ride (too much vibration and poor impact absorbtion).

Note that ALL of the above are considered common problems and should be considered normal maintenance.

I bought a 2003 2.7t 6Spd manual With 41k on it Oct 2007, had it chipped with Autothority it now has 51k, i have had no problems what so ever with it.  The car is fast, i wish  it was faster. The Turbos are quiet and i am quite confident that this car will last me until its paid off and buy an S6 ;)

I also was smart enough to buy a 5 years 100,000 warranty from the odometer reading when i bought with full bumper to bumper coverage includign high end electronics and emissions parts.  So if my turbos do go i am covered and the place i bought it from does the work and the policy is through Allstate.  And if i don;t use the warrantly i will get refuded 30-50% of the cost after 5 years.

I got 80k on the clock have spent probably over 3.5k on audi service and small fixes (cup holder, wipere blad assembly, turn signal relay, tires). All OEM Equipment from Dealer in NY.

wel...i bought mine about 2 months ago...didn't spent a cent on it except gas....which is quite alot, as for the weird electrical problem, my brake light went out for a few days, then come back on after,  that's the only weird problem I have experienced so far, but overall it's a great car to drive, if you can afford the cost, but that being said, if you want more performance over comfort, this might not be the one, on the other hand you want comfort with added performance, this might just be the one.

These are some of the things that I've had done that I can think of. I have the paperwork for most of it. It was done at the dealer, an indi shop, or by me. Not enough by me. I'm pretty limited in what I can do. I bought the car when it was 5 years old and had 56K on it. It's about 9 years old and has 95K on it. I hadn't abused it at all. These are just wear and tear things and bad engineering from what I understand.

has anyone else had any serious maintence issues like this guy? or does he just have a car seemed to be built by the devil? it still seems like some people have no issues what so ever then some people end up puttin 15k in their car in just a couple years. but every person just about still says they love driving the car either way.

I bought my 01' 2.7t this December and no major problems so far. Ive put about 4k miles on it and got it at 79k. Only thing is a minor air leak in a hose under the hood (FIXING SOON, $$?) and a bit of shaking on my front right tire at higher speeds. Then TB needs to be done and then turbos hopefully a loong time from now.
