I've been looking at putting an aftermarket headunit in my car, mostly to have better ipod capability and an updated NAV system. I have the bose radio. Crutchfield tells me I have to bypass the amp and run new wires to all speakers. That would mean rip the entire console/doorpanels/rear interior panels out? This sounds like much more trouble than it's worth. anyone here done it? Simply plugging in the harness won't work?
I can't really answer your question; but I can tell you that pulling out the head unit, removing the door panels, and removing the rear panels shouldn't take you more than an hour. It's a pretty easy job.
I dont have an exact answer either but, I did just install my pioneer cd/mp3/player w/ ipod hookups and i just used the "metra" harness granted i don't have an ipod anymore and havent checked it to see if that part of it works but everything else works i dont see why it wouldnt.
And at the end of my first post there is a list of parts I got. One is the wiring harness that allows you to run the bose speakers w/out running all new wires.

You'll need the metra 70-1787 harness, mount bracket kit, generic antenna adapter, and a ground loop isolator for rca jacks. You do not have to rewire everything. If you go with a decent unit with a good eq then it will transform your bose system. Here's a pic of my pioneer deh-7900bt (i think that's it):

To bad that blue doesn't go red. I hate how almost all the aftermarket HU are the wrong color. Thats one of the reasons I got the D3. You can change it to any color you want and it just so happens to have the red that matches our audi interior perfectly!!!!

^^^ It looks the same as the regular cd player/radio. the navi buttons are behind the handbrake handle in that little place where you can put coins and such. The navi screen displays on the center display of the instrument cluster.
Does anyone know, i know replacing the headunit will kill my factory nav, but i will still have the onboard computer, right?
Jensen makes really nice single DIN nav systems/dvd/mp3/ect. I have had 2 of them. Both are great! And for the price it's even better!

Hi, I'm a newbee here. I too am looking to add Bluetooth and iPod stuff to my TT. Some of the things I have seen on this thread are really neat but look so complicated. I have come across a system that has Bluetooth, iPod and Nav and you don't have to replace the head unit. On their website they have a picture of one mounted in a Mini-Cooper, which is real similar to the TT opening. http://www.bluetraks.com/ I guess you can buy it with or without the Nav. Anybody seen this website or product?
I tried to install my new radio but all the new wires from it wont fit in the back TOO MANY CABLES fuse boxes rca's.. HEADACHE has anyone done it? and where do u hide all those extra cables . plus the rear rca's arent doing anything
The way the bose radio/amp is designed it really is only a two channel system with woofers in the back. Everything will fit, but it took me an hour of moving and manipulating things to get it all in there. I seem to remember that I took off a side console panel to get better access so I could move things around and make sure everything had clearance. I also remember that I had to stuff some things down below the unit itself.

I would just keep trying. I have the jensen head unit and it fits perfect. As for the speakers on the door, I used all kicker speakers with a kicker 4.1 amp. I bought it off ebay for $300 instead of $600.
