Dear all,
I purchased 2001 A6 2.8 quattro3 months ago. it is 83000km now. It was fine when I got the car and recently I feel the engine noise is bigger than before and it seems to be not as powerful as before. During driving car, when I press acceleration, rpm goes up and during this time engine makes bigger noise and when rpm drops, engine noise reduces. this happens notconsistantly. Sometime it is ok, sometime it is not.The idle is as quite as before.

Is it possible a timing bletissue or asynchronize problem of the sparkling?

Thanks for any help.

When was the last time you got your oil changed?

Sounds to me like you are describing the sound of your mechanical fan. If so it is completely normal. You are only hearing it now because it is getting warmer out.

That's my guess.

thanks guys.

I changed my engine oil about one and half month ago. And I used 5w30 non-synthetic. Should I be better with synthetic?

Jeff, I think you might be right. Just one more question, will the fan run faster by default when I accelerate the car?

Many thanks and have a great day!

There are actually two fans on our cars. One is electric and only has a couple speeds. That is the one on the passenger side.

The other is run off a hydraulic clutch directly off of a pully. That one tends to engage more in hot weather. It will speed up and slow down with the engine speed with a little delay as its clutch is hydraulicly activated. My 2.8 Avant has that one running lately as well. However I don't notice any decrease in power. That fan simply doesn't take up that much hp or torque.

I should also mention though that mine isn't stock. I don't know if my has the tip chip or not but it has at least been reprogrammed. Don't know if the engine has been chipped or not. Just don't have a history on it.

I should also mention. Are you running the AC? It will come on automatically unless you press the 'econ' button (light lit). That will definetely make your performance decrease.

I don't really feel a loss of power when the mechanical fan engages, maybe a little. Now on our BMW it is very noticable, but we did buy a cheap aftermarket one for that car.

I did start noticing the noise in a day about 76F. I think the hydraulic fanis highly possible reason.

Thanks a lot guys. I guess I got enough answers about the concerns I have. Will cancel the appointment with dealer service.
