Default A6 brake pad replacement help

My boss has a 2006 Audi A6 and he wants me to replace the brake pads. I have done similar work on many different American cars, but never on an Audi.

What is involved in changing the brake pads (front & rear) on this car? Any special tools required? Is there anything I need to do to reset the lights on the dash? Is this something I can tackle or do I need to send him to the dealer? Any help is appreciated.

Default RE: A6 brake pad replacement help

You need to either buy or rent the tool for the rear brakes, its a twist in rear caliper (similar to honda).
The fronts shouldbe easy to do, you only need a 7mm allan socket. Just pop off the little dust caps then use the 7mm to free the two floating caliper bolts and swing the caliper over the rotor and replace the pads. The fronts have an electrical connector for the wear indicator, make sure to route the wire so it won't get caught by the brakes.

The rear you need a 13mm wrench and either a skinny 15mm wrench or needle nose pliers to counter hold the floating bolt. Once the caliper and pads are off you need to use the special tool to re-compress the piston using the twisting method that i described. Re-install the pads and your done.

What about the warning lights on the dash. Not sure what is on, he just said there was a light on. Probably the wear indicator. Will this all correct itself once the pads are on?

How do I go about readjusting the rear pads after I'm done? Will the caliper reset itself after some driving?

Thanks.

Just be aware that the seals on the front brake calipers arethe subject of a TSB to correct a clearance/groaning issue.

I don't think there are any issues, just the light on the dash, and the pads almost worn out. What is the deal with the TSB?

Brakes make moaning or "muh" noise when accelerating from stop or turning at slow speeds

January 22, 2008 to add note concerning acceptable lubricants.
Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment

A6 2005 400000 – 999999
A6 2006 – 2008 All
FNRG Brakes
Condition
“Muh” sound or moaning noise coming from the front brakes (FNRG) in the following conditions:
Slowly pulling away after a stop.
While turning at low speeds.
The performance of the brakes is not compromised.
Technical Background
The pistons in the calipers in certain vehicles may not retract far enough, which may leave contact between the
rotor and pad. This contact may cause a “muh” sound or moaning noise in low speed conditions.
Production Solution

New caliper piston seals have been developed to allow the pistons to retract further.

The light on the dash will turn off when you change the pads.

He didn't say anything about any noises, so I will see if I can borrow or rent the tool for the rears, and then change the pads.

Shouldn't be too much trouble. Thanks for the help.
