To my understanding when using a diode to turn up boost the ecu relys on the MAF to add more fuel. So what happens when the MAF goes out? Does the car start knocking and throw a CEL?

No, i had what i thought was a bad maf and it ran as good as it did with the maf when it was unplugged.
