Default 13mpg bad gas mileage A6 QUATTRO 2001

Hello folks, I am new to the forum.

Couple of month ago, I have purchased Audi A6 QUATTRO 2001, it had about 103k miles on it. I drove it for 10k already, and I never paid attention to my MPG.
But with this gas prices going up up and away like crazy, I was curious to see how is my audi on the gas, and it turned out to be TERRIBLE. It's like driving a freaking hummer,
in the city, I get arround 12-14mpg!!! I don't speed, it's an automatic transmission, but seems to be shifting fine. I drive it smoothly, but nothing helps.

When I was going to South Carolina from New York, I was driving 60mp/h all the way (I know it's boring), and I got 28mpg!!! on cruise control! Yes, it was boring, but it saved me gas money!

But this city driving MPG is just killing me! Even combined with city highway, I am not getting anymore than 18-19mpg... =( I gas up with 93...
Any advices? Anyone had this problem and fixed it? WHat can be done? =(

P.S. where would you guys recommend me to get a good timing belt kit?

which motor are you dealing with? My wife's 2.7 gets about 16 to 19with VERY VERY short city driving and the occasional weekend errands, we get about 22 to 24 on the Hwy

Also, the TB kit is available from ECS tuning, you quite possibly would be a good candidate for a serious tune-up as well

Hi. Well your highway mileage sounds about like what most A6's get. If I'm highway crusing in mine at 60 mph, about the best I get is 28-29 mpg. In town it will vary, depending on wether or not you're going block to block and from one red light to another. I've seen my mileage in town as low as 12-14mpgin heavy traffic and going from light to light. But I've also seen my city mileage be as hi as 21-22mpg when traffic is light and I'm not running the A/C. I can tell you that if your car has the Tiptronic Tranny, you can usually improve your mileage by shifting in manual mode somewhere between the 2200to 2500 rpm range.Another thing that will helpis to make sure you're not just driving around with unecessary weight in the trunk, keeping the car tuned and running the factory recommended air pressure in your tires. I also use a K & N Air Filter, whichprobably helps a bit when you consider the total mileage on a full tank of gas.

Hey Guys, we are dealing with a 2.8L engine on a tiptronnic tranny... I am driving mostly in brooklyn, which is most of the time a light to light trip but still... I mean it's way off of the factory 18 mpg =(

For manual shifting, here is a nooby question, how do I shift down before slowing down? Or do I let the computer decide and just take care of shiftin up when I start going?

P.S. Major tuneup... so far I have came up with two things: timing belt, spark plugs and the oxygen sensor. I am mechanically inclined and very eager to do it all myself, so I am pretty sure that I can do it, especially with all those manuals on audidiy ... what else would you guys recommend?

First off stop wasting your money on 93. your car is a 2.8l non turbo, non modified engine. It can not utilize more than 91 anyways. Read your manual, you can use 87 just fine. Now of course people will argue this till were all blue in the face, but my manual says 87 is fine and my gas door say 91 ron which equals 87 aki (USA standard) so 87 is just fine. I get 24mpg hwy with average speed ~65 using 87. I get about 25/26 using 91. In city I get about 15, but I am 30 and drive like I'm 60. If I drove like I did when I was 16-25 I would get about what you are getting.

Second you are driving in the city, city milage sucks when you have a big heavy car with a little motor that is trying really hard to move the car.

Do you have a check engine light? If not, take off a little slower, and realize that city milage sucks.

I don't think you're way off but I would have a shop tune the car up. Check tire pressure too.
These cars are horrible in city driving for gas mileage.

Gotcha guys, thanks... definitely will switch over to 87... =-) I'll be changing tb soon and I think to change spark plugs and oxy sensor... I think spark plugs would help my mpg a little, considering that the car is 113k miles old... and also, I drive slower than all of your grandmother because of the MPG mainly. =)
