Default FUEL FILTER REMOVAL? HELP

Hi,
Could anyone advise me on how to remove a Fuel filter from a 1998 Audi A3? I tried doing this today but without any luck, i'm hopeing someone with more expert knowledge on this can help, the removal of the clips from the the ends of the filter were a nightmare and as i didn't want to damage anything i have noe left it until i get further help.
I would be very grateful if someone could help....

Normally you shove a 2x4 up there to force the tank to drop down slightly. This will give some working room.
