Default front lower control arm

Hello Everyone,
Left front lower control arms in my '98 A6 need to be replaced as per Audi dealer. Since I have no warranty anymore they want to charge aroud 1200 only for one side.
How hard is it to replace it. I replaced front brake pads recently. Do I need any special tools? None of my sockets fit on the main screw, don't even know what's the size of the screw, I think its 18mm but not sure.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Jacek

If you've never attempted this before - don't. Buy the parts on-line and take them to a reputable (other than Audi) repair shop to get a fair labor price. Audi's burn through control arms faster than any other cars I've owned. And when they are worn they cause a multitude of problems and symtoms. Be sure the arms come with new bushings and\or kits. Also check if Audi has released newer part numbers for your model as they have constantly upgraded parts trying to solve their suspension design issues.

Thank you for the response. I looked into replacing the arms myself at some points, but looks like I would have to get some tools and jacks, may not be worth. I think I will just follow your advise, buy the arm with the kit online and bring it to the mechanic I know.
Audi Dealers are overcharging regularly.

Typically your suspension will squeak when you go over bumps.

I get a metalic kind of thump when starting or stopping. it does not always happen. I have pulled both wheels in front and can see nothing loose. the various bushings seem intact. what would be some symptons of the controll arms, tie rod ends. something is making this noise.

any suggestions?
