Temp light/coolant problems

I have a 2000 A6 2.7T with 81K miles. Absoluely love it. But here lately the temp light comes on and I have to add coolant, but I have only seen coolant on the ground one time like it leaked. So what and where do I start looking to see if there is a leak. Thanks.
