Default Cam position sensor

I have a 2001 Allroad (6 speed). Last October I got a diagnostic which my mechanic said was for two items: one of the oxygen sensors needed to be replaced, and cam seals needed to be replaced. He said that neither was an emergency, and that I could drive the car indefinately before making the repairs.

Three weeks ago, catastrophic engine failure (heads, valves, turbo failure). He said that my cam position sensor had gone bad, causing the meltdown.

Does this scenario sound right? Should the cam position sensor go bad without warning, or was the new warning not detected because I was running with the warning light already on for the 02 sensor?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
