Default GAS MILEAGE ISSUE!!!

Hi everyone,

So my gf bought a 2004 audi a4 1.8t about a 2 months ago with 42000 miles on it. The car has brand new breaks and rotors and seems to run fine except the gas mileage. We filled up about 10 times already since she has had the car and we reset the average gas mileage. She has driven well over 3000 miles without resetting it again and for some reason the gas mileage wont "lock in" on an average. Everytime she accelerate it goes down to 15mpg and when shes on the highway it goes to 25-28mpg. I have a s4 and my average gas mileage is "locked in" at 19.8mpg. Also she seems to get about 130 miles till about half tank and on my s4 im gettin about 175... which my car should be a lot worse on gas then hers since she has a much smaller engine than mine I4 1.8t vs my s4 v6 2.7t.

Any suggestions at what the problem could be???

Her computer display is set to read the current mpg. You need to click on that right arm (fron the steering wheel) and set it to read the Average mpg with # 2. I had the same problem.

Thanks for the answer but i have a question.

1.) do you have any ideas as to why she is getting around 130 miles to a half tank with a 1.8T and my S4 gets around 175 miles to a half tank?

What s4 do u have??? B5 or b6/b7???
I get about 300 miles/tank. 1.8T is not that economic in a city, but much better on a hwy.
is that manual or auto???Turbo kicks in at 3100rpms, so before that, it is harder for the engine to accelerate. I think it is better to shift at about 3500 with normal driving.
Plus 02 sensor might be bad. Also, check the psi in the tires.

My 1.8T averages 460 miles per tank and sits at about 200+ at half a tank. I do not have a Q and I also keep my foot off the floor. My days of driving fast everywhere are over. Check the tire pressure, o2 sensors, air filter, plugs. Also if you haven't gotten it checked up since the purchase, you might want to get a ONCE OVER.

yea, also check the previous owner had any maintainance history such as overdue service. Also check your tranny and engine stick for the level and colour. You might need a eng flush or tranny flush if its really dark and sludgy. Car would run smoother if everything was checked once a month or any leakage underneath the car.

i have a B5 s4 and my gf doesnt floor the car but it does shift around 3500-4000 rpm. The a4 is a b6 body and its automatic. Also what stick are you talking about to change the gas mileage to the number 2 setting i cant figure it out.

I also checked all the fluids and everything is up to par except i beleive and oil change and maybe her air filter might need to be changed. Also i still have to check the tire pressure.

Thanks for all the solutions so far!!

There is a rocker switch on the end of the windshield wiper controls. There is also a reset button on the underside of that stick.
