They work only when your car's headlights are on... Just turn your lights on, and spray some water on a windshield, headlight washers will come out automatically.

Audiprotein is right.. What you should also know is that the spray also falls on your hood.... I try to avoid using the washers with the headlights on so I don't ruin my hard earned Wax job shine

incorrect....... all you do is hold the windshield washer in for 5 seconds, thats why they did that so you wont spray your headlight if not needed.. also, the headlights dont have to be on. just FYI

2003 A4 1.8TQM and when I turn on my windshield washers, lights on or off, my headlight washers come on immediately for less than two seconds then go back off, regardless of how long I have the wipers on.

That said, there is now a leak (it started IMMEDIATELY after my stealership did the 60000 mile $420 check up, including leak checks. It was leaking within 30 seconds of getting it in my driveway...), and my wiper fluid was gushing out of the left headlight washer, and the stealership said it was a check valve. I didn't get it fixed, and it stopped leaking, maybe something just got stuck open, but I haven't put any washer fluid in and its not low so it still has some in there. who knows.
