Default Transmission Trouble

My 02 Audi A4 has been having trouble switching from Park to Reverse. I can usually get it going if I move to neutral and then to Reverse. Does this sound like a expensive transmission problem or maybe a transmission fluid problem to you?

I generally pull the e-brake before letting off the brake and putting it into park so the car wont roll putting presure on the transmission. I noticed when I didn't use the e-brake, it would be a little difficult going from park to reverse.

Well the Gear Selector (P R N D) is lighting up and flashing now. The book that came with the car indicates that this happens when the car goes into FAIL/SAFE mode. It also says to take it to an Audi Dealership.

Has anyone else had this problem, or have any idea where I should start to try to diagnose the problem?

What kind of transmission is it? CVT? If so, search the forums for "TCM" and you'll findwhat your problem is.
