Default Newbie w/ a few ?'s

I am new to Audis but not to mechanics. I am looking to get an audi A4 or A6, just curious of what the pros and cons are. A4 1.8t or 2.8 or 3.0 A6 2.7t all quatro models.
I am wondering as far as performance maitenance, reliability, mileage expectancy, and modification, which one is best. I am really interested in the A6 2.7 biturbo. Now by biturbo, is that the same as twin turbo? Also, I know six spd os amazing, but how welldo the auto's w/ triptonic hold up and perform, Wife wants auto Iwant manual, is it worth it?? Any help would be appreciated. sorry for all the questions. I am just kind of oblivious to audi tech.

Check the A4 forum, and at the top is the Newbie Guide. It'll answer quite a few of your questions and help point you in the direction that will work best for you, as many drivetrain options are the same for the 4 and 6 cars. General Tech is a less-travelled forum, so that's probably partly why you haven't seen any replies yet.

this has actually been discussd quite a few times but still A4 1.8t good car takes to mod good, AEB engines (1996-2000) had issues with sludge not sure about the 2001 AWN engine, overall a good car that will do mnay miles as long as the maintenece is done (you can find the maintence throughout the site). the A4 2.8 is a reliable DD car, not really good for mods, just a nice cruiser not the fastest thing around but still nice. 3.0 is pretty much the same thing only newer engine and higher displacement. the A6 2.8 and 3.0 are th e same as the A4 only a bit roomier. the A6 2.7t is a a great comparable to a roomier B5 S4. again good car but i had a buddy with the same engine that the turbo fail twice, then again he drove it like he stole it. again will last as long as you take care of it.
