Default do you have to change lower control arms if you change upper?

2000 a6 4.2.

can you change the upper control arms (on one side) and not change the lower and be ok? my local mech. says that just my right front upper control arms are bad but i was told once that you have to change all four (meaning 2 upper and 2 lower).

I don't see y you would have to change them if they are not bad. It wouldn't make a difference. Are the bushings bad?

True, you don't have to change all of them at once. If you are paying for the work, you should minimize the expense. Put, you will have to go back sometime in the future. If you are buying your parts from the mechanic at mechanic's rates, you probably REALLY want to only replace those that have gone bad.

Since I do my own work, I am going to replace them all just to be done with it.

You certainly do not have to, but in my experience, when one starts to fail, another one will be right behind it! Plus if you buy a complete kit, it will save you money!

surely he just wants to sell you everything you can use (that's his job in a way) but it also is not a bad idea
