Default Swapping manual transmission for CVT

Hello all,

I have a 1.8T FWD A4 with CVT and I am wondering if anyone out there has successfully swapped out manual transmission for the CVT or if you know if it is possible? I am not familiar enough with the engine or tranny to know if they have a common mating configuration.

Thanks,

-Matt

you got more money than sense... cheapest route is to sell your car then buy a six speed

I would agree, assuming a normall functioning CVT. However, faced with a rebuild or new CVT, I am not sure it is a ludicrous question.

in that case, there is a kid on audizine who said he already has the shop switching him from a TIP tranny to six speed.. i know the rear driveshaft is a different length so plan for that, i am not sure how the ECU will respond to not having a tranny to talk to, it might be lonely and throw fits at you

Engine/trannies are not just configurated, they're MADE specifically. Interior, ECU, frame, braces. Considering you don't know much bout how they work with each other I guess you're taking it to a shop. IF (big IF) you do find a shop that's willing to mess around with a swap you'll get charged up the nose. Figure $7-8k. That's a ludicrous price to me.

I wondered the same thing in going from 5 speed to 6 speed and you know what everyone told me?

BUY A 6 SPEED!

It makes more sense and will avoid TONS of problems for you... To me, it's worth it

That would be hard to sell the withswapped transmission in a future. And all the money you gonna spend on that could be put in to trading it fo a 5 or 6 speed + some extra mods.

Costs Vs. Benefits

Taking into account Time, money, effort, resale value and other problems that lie with a Tranny swap (especially yours), the costs outweigh the benefits

Just sell your current car and buy what you really want. The money you don't spend on the conversion will more than offset any loss you incur selling your present car.
