I've tested holding down the other presets while powering on the unit (with the key in and out) and the EQ doesn't appear to come up, when I hold down 5. The other options (Other than the "Other" options, I haven't tried that yet) work http://www.ibiblio.org/tkan/audi/radios/symphony.html

Is there some way the EQ could be locked? Do I have to be in a certain mode? (I've tried FM and CD)
