Default TECH HELP NEEDED 1.8t low on oil, could I have damaged the engine?

Hi guys,

Wondering if you can helpme, I am from the A6 forum but my wife has a Passat with the 1.8t engine The same one they put in the A4. Yesterday we drove about 300 mileswith no obvious problems, however as we neared our destination we turned off the freeway on one of those 4 leaf clovers an the oil pressure warning light came on and that beep sounded that you never wanted to hear. So we parked the car over night and today I checked the oil level. When I first pulled the dipstick there was a little oil on the bottom of the stick but no ware near what was there when I checked it a few weeks ago, I wiped it and plunged it back in for another look and the stick was dry. I put in two quarts of oil and it was then full.

The car has obviously been running low on oil for a while as I have not see any leaks does anyone know if will have damaged the engine?and if there are any things I should be checking? obviously there is little that I can do now beyond toping up the oil (which I have done) and check it regualy.

Thanks
James

Have you checked underneath the car with a haul? Best thing I can suggest for you is take it to your personal mechanic and let him check out your car, because leaks can be visible even if you don't see any drips on your driveway or when you idle on a stop.

And yes running low oil or no oil at all will increase the risk of damaging your engine and also overfilling will damaging your car. Engine oil is there to clean and cool down your engine, its not a japanese engine where you can run for a long time without engine oil, it will break down and start to smoke if you don't have any oil in your engine while running.

Id say if the oil light came up at the end of the trip, then basically your car was kinda ok on oil until that oil light came up. Check you belly pan area for any leaks.
Is the light still on after you added the oil???

i say take it to the dealer and have it checked...seems you might be having an issue with oil sludge, its a common issue with 1.8 motors....that can be serious and should not be overlooked.
