Default Looking at a 99 Quattro v6

I found a 1999 A4 Quattro V6 5 speed for $5500 obo w/ 128k miles. Says all scheduled maintenance has been done but I need to call to confirm stuff like the timing belt and tensioner. Anything else? Is $5500 a reasonable deal or would it be ok to offer 4800-5000? I have a 1990 Mazda Rx-7 Turbo that I am selling right now for about $5000 and really no extra money other than that. I am just looking at the Audi as a more sensible DD. The RX-7 is just a little too stiff and jerky but a blast to drive. I hope this isnt too much of the typical "noob first post" sorry if it is. I did a quick search but over all I am not sure what to be looking for right now. Just looking for a little help to make a smart purchase.

That's probably a good price, but obviously it's going to depend on a lot of factors. I would offer $5000 and go from there.

As for being a sensible DD, I'm not so sure. They're nice cars and that's a solid engine, but you will need to be prepared to spend some money on repairs, especially in the first year.

Just a few words of wisdom from a fellow 2.8er who also has a Euro-Spec 1.8T.

If you are looking for a daily driver, and would be happy with the power/handling of the 2.8 as it sits stock, go for it. If you want to do mods, thenI would look for a 1.8T in the same price range. Not much you can do for power in the 2.8, other than the PES G2 supercharger, which I opted for...now that will add at least another 5k to your original 5k once all is said an done...all said, the 1.8T is much easier to squeeze out more ponies via a myriad of chips, turbo upgrades, etc...

...don't get me wrong, I love my Avant, but it took a bit of cash to get it to run witha modded 1.8T.

Cheers,

Steve

Am I the only one who is absolutely furious about the terrible market value/resale value of our cars. WTF is $5000 for an AUDI!! I don't plan on selling mine, but thats even more of a reason not to. I guess people just don't respect the Audi luxury brand yet...or maybe I'm just ranting. Who knows...I just walked in the door from work...But I love Audi's and wish more ppl saw the potential in them.

I think I have had my fun for now. Did a full drivetrain swap on the RX-7 sure it pulls nicely to 150 but I dont need to be going that fast. If I do decide I need a performance car again it will be when I have a much more stable job and I can afford to have a track car. I am somewhat aware of the common problems on these but not enough I will admit. I will be doing ALL the work to this car myself so labor costs are no issue for me but I realize even parts can and usually do add up. I just posted up 2 things for sale which should give me about 500 to work w/ and that I believe should go a long way doing the work myself. Not to mention I should be able to get the parts I need a bit cheaper through wholesalers. I need to make a check list of question's to ask the owner of the car. I know the big one is the timing belt but what else? Thanks for the newbie link lol it did help a little. Jason I know what you mean about the value of these I was fully expecting to see them way out of my price range but honestly 5k is perfect but on the other hand I was even more shocked that w/o any advertising I got 3 people interested in my 7 for $5500. I was expecting offer's of more like 4000. Thanks for the help

Edit: Also I believe it is a 99.5 model because the center console appears to have been changed a little.

Well I called the guy and offered him 5000 and he said he had been getting offers of 4600 and counter offered 4800 lol. So as soon as my 7 sell's for 4900 I will be picking this thing up! He said he did the timing belt at 75000 so its going to be due again at 150000. Clutch hasn't been done yet so I am expecting it to need one in the near future which I know is gonna be a PITA. Also it had new tires last year. Looks like I am getting a good deal right? Can't wait to get it!

128k miles.. mmmmm when i bought my first audi ( 96k miles) i heard that parts where expensive and all that, after 2months i had to do the timing belt, water pump, replaced the fuel level sending unit, the cd changer is not working, bla bla bla...... THEY RE EXPENSIVE TO FIX, so with 128k miles, have MONEY, ready to spend on it at least 1,000, i dont want 2 exaggerate but. good luck!

lol I got the exact same car for the exact same price, only mine was 114k miles. Unforetuneately, the engine needed alot of work when I started driving it. Over a thousand dollars was spent after buying it.

definately check on the tensioners and timing belts cuz when they go that will be a pretty penny. also see if the clutch has ever been replaced? i have 140k on my b5 and replaced the clutch around 130k and that cost me over a grand. if you are lookin to mod the car tho go with the 1.8t. i wish i would have gone that direction. but whatever, shit happens

I asked the guy a lot of questions and he said he has had all the scheduled maintenance and the timing belt and water pump and tensioner was done at 75000 which means I will have to do it again in the near enough future. Seen a few done and I have plenty of help to do it. The clutch I am pretty much assuming will need replaced and again I will be doing it but it will still cost me about 500 for the kit (that was an off the top of the head estimate from the shop) The guy says that all the fluid flushes were done on schedule too. I am expecting to have to put money in but it sounds like it has been very well taken care of. 1 question. What is the little symbol on the bottom of the steering wheel I didn't think that an A4 had anything there.
