Default Annoying Rattle

Hey everybody!
First off, thanks to all those who helped me with my brakelight issue. Problem solved!
Secondly, I have this annoying rattle coming from the front end. Basically, it occurs when I apply the brake and when I'm at a complete stop. It's definitely coming from the exterior as it is only heard when my windowsare down. I sounds like a rapid ticking (metal on metal). I took it to a mechanic and he doesn't seem to know where it's coming from.

A few more bits:
-2000 A4 1.8TQ
-It's not heard while driving or going over any bumps
-the under carriage (including exhaust) does not seem to have any loose fittings
-no warnings or status messages on the cluster

Any advice?

Thanks!

no pinging from the engine. just when the brake is applied while in drive (most noticeable at a complete stop). Sounds like one of those oscillating floor fans whose spinning fan blade is hitting the metal cage/frame .. like a fast metal on metal rattling

Thanks!
