CV Axle Question

Alright I picked up a new CV axle at Carquest on Saturday. After yanking out the original axle I realized that they look different. The original axle has a constant diameter for the entire length, but the new one tapers down in size towards the outer CV joint like thepic attached.

I have a feeling that the new one I got is actually for an A4, but I don't know. Carquest insists that it is for an S4.

Has anyone put one of these tapered down axles in thier S4? Or has anyone been able to find an aftermarket axle that is thick the whole way down?

I have to fix mine soon and would love to know whether you had any luck with the ones from Carquest. How much were they from there? I was probably just going to buy the joint kit from www.autohausaz.com though seeing I think the axles are fine but my boots are ripped. No clicking yet but living in the northeast it's only a matter of time. Good luck!

I would never buy from any of those type of websites. Go to ecstuning man. If it tapers like that I don't know just get another.

Hozmer79 have fun and just do the boots, you dont need a press to press them off and on just a hammer. Don't wait too long if they are ripped the inside of your wheels and brakes will be covered with greasethat was fun wiping off for me. Oh and once the knuckles are exposed if you turn them too far the bearings will fall out and stuff..

comes pre greased and you get all the tools. I got an A4 axle when I ordered from other company. plus I greased it up. that was a pain. raxles also gives you a new axle bolt and hardware.
the A4 axles are smaller diameter all the way throughout the axle.

Hosmer - I have the same thing going on with my 01 S4. Live in the NE as well, right outside of Philly. I found the boot kit for very cheap at http://mjmautohaus.com/

You can get two Boot kits for the normal price of one. Might replace both. Let me know if you live near the area.

I have heard that Audi 100 axels work as a nice upgrade as well. I have only heard that though with no confirmation.

Thanks Superdug. An upgrade is always a nice idea! Anyone know if this is true or not or what may be the best axle or place to get them? I've got to replace them both and a tie rod that's going clankyity clunk when I'm braking slow around 10mph occasionally. Bkcox_S4 I'm up in western Massachusetts so not real close otherwise I'd say lets have a CV Joint Party! Thanks!

I'm down for a party. Lets get 15 or 20 of us to pitch in $100 bucks and we can put a lift on my sideyard. I'll even BBQ for everyone, ha!

I think I may just take back that axle and pull the old one out, clean it up, and see if I can't just reboot her. Is there anything that I should be looking for as far as signs that It needs to be replaced vs. rebooted? It didn't ever click that I noticed but I have a feeling that it has been torn all through the winter. The grease was EVERYWHERE, just like someone commented on earlier!

I'll let you guys know what I find out.
