i just bought a 1999 1.8t with 91,000 miles . went to a local mechanic to check it for any problems under the car. couple things here and there. about $900 in repairs. (damn european car labor cost[:@]) but the only thing im worried about is timing belt going out. other than that i love the car. interior is nice and sporty. car is pretty quick and fast. also i drive it everywhere and have not once said to myself i need a better suspension.

As far as suspension goes, it isn't bad from the factory, just prone to some issues. Control arms go bad frequently on the A4's, however you can fix them on the cheap if you DIY. Just search there is tons of information that can answer all your questions.

Good luck with the car search Audis are awesome!

I have a 2000 a4 1.8! I havent had much problems with suspension at all... I changed my suspension around 105,000 just because i wanted to lower it... Although if the owner has not replaced the timing belt, you need to get that done... Its $500 from a non-stealership.. look to pay alot more though at a dealership... My tie-rods/cv boot is going out now around 113,000 but thats common i would think... I am replacing my 02 sensors now but ive been doing some modding and I have a rich tune right now so Im pointing the finger at that one... Other than that Its a excellent car all around id definately say buy a quattro and manual...

I havea 2001 1.8T with sport package and the suspension is great, tight, no problems at all.. I don't know anything about the standard suspension, but sport package is the way to go if you can find one!
As for mileage, I get 20-25 in the city depending on season and how much stop and go, and highway usually at least 28-30 if I'm not goin over 80 so it's really good.

I'm getting 26 to 31 mpg with my 2001 1.8tqm with average driving. The mpg status on the screen is really accurate...at least on my car...
