Default Turbo Replacement

Hey guys. Ran into a problem on my 1.8t: the main bearings on the turbo have gone off canter and now it's got to be replaced. I've got a replacement turbo coming and plan on doing it myself and all to save money (because I don't/can't spend the 12k to get it fixed professionally [gauging maybe?]). I've picked up a Haynes manual and have looked through it to make sure that I can do it myself and it all looks strait forward, it's just a matter of getting to it, bolting the old off and bolting the new one on.
MY QUESTION: have any of you had to do this (or similar) before, is there anything in particular I need to watch out for, and is/are there any other things that I would need to check and make sure are working fine (since the old one burns the oil).

Thanks for any help

PS: turbo is aftermarket made for the VW 2003 Passat 1.8t (same model for audi 2003 a4 1.8t)
