Default strong gas smell

We just bought a 98 A4 with 59k miles. We filled up the car for the first time, and there is a strong gas smell eminating from the car, mostly around the wheel well area near the fill-up tube.

Any ideas? My garage smells grrrrrrrrreat!

Thanks.

i would say to take it to your mechanic and have him/her check your tank, filler neck, and lines for leaks. i used to drive a couple chevys that had the same problem.

Had a similar problem with my BMW. Definitely need to get the car up on a lift to have a good look around. Mine ended up being the seal around the sender unit. There are way too many possibilities for leaks in that area, and best to check things out in the air, instead of when on jackstands lying on your back.

Thanks for the responses. I'll have my mechanic take a look at it. Repairs??? I just got rid of my Volvo, so unfortunetaly repairs are not uncommon in my household.
