Default Ok to let compressor fail?

I have a 1998A4 Quattroand I hear a buzzing/rattling sound when the A/C is off. A mechanicis telling memy compressor is failing and I need a new one installed, which will cost $2,000.

I cannot afford $2k. Is there any danger to the car if I simply let the compressor fail?

Someone else chime in after but I believe that just depends how it fails. It should not hurt the engine but it could lock up and brake your drivebelt. You would also lose power steering, alternator, something else I am missing?. Also who knows but the belt could flap around and damage plastic items under the hood.

^What he said. If the bearing is making noise, it could eventually freeze up and cause some serious issues down the road such as a snapped belt.

$2000 is a ridiculously high price. This should be a DIY job if you have some mechanical experience. I'm not sure what engine you have, but you can buy parts from ECS and install them yourself. When you're done, you can take it to your mechanic and have the A/C recharged and leak-tested. You can at least buy the parts on your own to try and save a few bucks, even if you pay someone to install them.

How much shoulda compressorcost new? The shopsaid$950.

I've seen refurbished ones online for about $400. I am thinking of going that route and just paying for labor...or is a refurb part a mistake?

You may be okay getting away with a refurbished computer, but refurbished parts for automobiles are a big no-no.

Rebuilt alternators, starters, and compressors are sold on a regular basis. Just make sure it has a warranty.

ECS sells a re-man'd compressor for under $300 IIRC. BIG difference in price over $950! Also, you may need to SPECIFY to the dealer for a new compressor.
