Audi developed two high performance versions of the Audi 80/90 one of which was the Audi S2. The
RS2 came first and it inspired Audi to go ahead and develop something similar. Though
Porsche did not team up with Audi for the S2 as they had with the
RS2, the S2 still proved to be quite the powerful little car. The S2 had a very similar 2.2 liter 20 valve I5 turbocharged engine that provided more than your average power. Just as the RS2 had offered the Audi Quattro all wheel drive, the Audi S2 came standard with the all wheel drive system, as well. The S2 came standard with a heavy-duty manual transmission, as well.
The 2.2-liter engine that provided 230 horsepower, which was quite respectable powered the S2. Audi reported that the S2 could accelerate from 0-62 in about six seconds. The top speed is electronically governed at 246 km/h. The S2 Avant does the same run in 6.1 seconds and has a slightly less speed topping out at 242 km/h. A related 2.2-liter turbocharged engine that provided an increased horsepower at 315 powered the similar RS2. The RS2 could accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in just 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 262km/h, which made it a bit faster than the S2. The S2 appealed to more people because it came in a sedan as well as the Avant station wagon that the RS2 came in.
