91 Audi 80 won't start, perhaps a plug loose?

Hi folks,
I got my 1991 Audi 80 (not a quattro) a year ago after a fender bender put my truck out of commish for a few months. I love this car, with hardly any issues, and am the 3rd owner, I did talk to the 1st, who is a great guy.
So a brief history about the issue.
Battery started to go dead after some very cold days here in WI. AND I needed to re-hang my muffler. Got a new battery, and rehung my muffler, my car started right up and I pulled out of the snowy driveway where I park my car.
What I didn't realize was that I had forgotten that I had put an old rim on the passenger side, to block up the back tire, in case it rolled as its a manual.
Well I gunned it thinking it was snow... or ripping off my muffler... Which to my happiness (short lived) my muffler was fine. The car sat on the street idling for a few minutes while I cleared some more snow, and noticed the rim...
Drove the car around for a few minutes and backed it into the parking space.
I realized I was too far back and went to start her up again..
Nothing, zip, zero, nada... Tried to jump start it with husband's car.. nope...
Well took the battery back when they opened, it checked fine. got a new grounding strap and a positive cable that I didn't use.
Replaced the strap and I have good lights, good electronics.. but still won't start, not even a click.
Got out my jack, crawled under the car to check connections, and saw this.

Now I am assuming that my starter needs to be replaced. BUT before I go and shell out $125 dollars, I want to see if any one knows where this plug goes? I have taken off the grill, tried to remove a light, crawled under and taken a flash light and can't see a receptacle for this plug.
The AC does NOT work, the hose has been disconnected, and perhaps the unit was removed. I can see there might have been a space for it.
Should I try to hit my starter with a hammer as a mechanic suggested?
Any info would be helpful!!
