Fuel Pump and Filter

I just recently obtained a 1988 mod-90 with just under 50,000. The car has been garage kept and lady driven for its whole life. I have decided to replace the fuel pump and filter. Can anyone give me any pointers on doing this, it appears to be tricky. I could go to my dealership and have them do it (only $700.00) yeah right! I ordered the pump from Germany and saved $300.00 just by doing that. Why throw money away when you can do it yourself.<img border="0" src=smileys/smiley4.gif border="0">

RE: Fuel Pump and Filter

I just replaced mine in a 91 audi 80Q, it was my first time doing it and other than it taking me all day and smelling like gas at the end, it wasnt bad. I would deffinitly recommend clamping the hose that goes from the gas tank to the fuel pump before removal. Other than that it helped to have a person hold the fuel pump in place while removing the bolts ( the bracket the holds the fuel pump/fuel filter up is pretty flimsy) I found it easiest to remove the bolts with a breaker bar ( looks like a long ratchet if you havent seen one before) but you should be fine with just a 3/8's ratchet or 1/2. Also make sure you dont twist the fuel lines up, or get any kinks. Other than that its pretty easy to do, The hardest part is the removal of the old junk. Hope that helps
