Oil consumption
My 1991 Audi 80 (Typ 89) seems to consume some oil and I can not see any leaks.
I've noticed there is a hole in the exhaust near the engine. Could this have something to do with it? I'm also a bit worried about the slightly "jerky" performance. It jerks/yanks occasionally while driving, like it's bad plugs or something. The plugs are fine, though. Greets HP |
RE: Oil consumption
Consuming which oil, at first I am thinking motor oil and worn valve seals. But the (typ 89) throws me off as Audis have an automatic transmission that is 089. Are you loosing ATF? If so than it is worn seal and bushings on the torque converter but this you would always see as a puddle under the car.

RE: Oil consumption
The oil I'm refering to is motor oil. And my car is a regular manual.

RE: Oil consumption
If your car is 4-cyl and has over 100K then you need to replace the valve stem oil seals. My 4000S used to burn 1 quart every 3K before I replaced them.

RE: Oil consumption
Ok, thanks for the advice. Are we talking big bucks here?

RE: Oil consumption
If you take it to a shop then it will cost big $$$. If you do it yourself not too bad but requires some special tools. You can change the seals buy not taking the head off and using a special spring compressor and seal puller pliers but I found it much easier to take the head off. Also if the valve guides are shot and have excessive play you will need to have the cylinder head remanufactured. I did this in a day on both 5 and 4 cylinder engines provided you don’t run into other hiccups.
